Job Summary
Under general supervision, to perform experienced level skilled work in the maintenance and operation of power plants.
Duties and Responsibilities- Perform skilled power plant maintenance and operation work.
- Inspect and maintain plant equipment and facilities.
- Design and troubleshoot various electronic and mechanical equipment and circuitry.
- Meggering and high‑pot testing.
- Check and record exciter generator brush condition, relays and daily generator operations.
- Operate switchboard, switchyard, hydraulic governors, and spillway gates.
- Perform welding and fabrication work.
- Operate radio and telephone equipment.
- Maintain a variety of records including those for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
- Transmission and distribution line patrolling.
- Respond to emergency situations and be on‑call as assigned.
- Serve as acting Power Plant Supervisor as assigned.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned by supervisor.
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the skills and abilities would be:
- Education
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. - Experience
Completion of an apprenticeship program or recognized status as a Power Plant Technician at a similar facility. - Skills and Abilities
Interpersonal and communication: ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; follow oral and written instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Technical and analytical: ability to use technical manuals; electrical, mechanical and civil blueprints; electrical test equipment; computerized analysis equipment; machine, power and hand tools; knowledge of methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in the maintenance and operation of power plant facilities; basic electricity, mechanical and hydraulic principles; record‑keeping and reporting procedures; hazards and safety precautions; ability to read and interpret plans and specifications;
electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and civil drawings.
Administration and operations: ability to prepare daily power, water and weather reports; operate plant and appurtenances as needed and record same.
- Possession of an appropriate California driver's license.
- All power plant classifications permanently assigned to the Don Pedro Dam Powerhouse must live in a district house at the Don Pedro Dam area.
- ‑call periods:
Employees assigned an on‑call period have a response time obligation as listed below:
- Turlock Broadway Yard Control Center – Arrive within thirty (30) minutes of the callout, obeying all applicable traffic laws.
- Don Pedro Lake Powerhouse – Arrive within thirty (30) minutes of the callout, obeying all applicable traffic laws.
While the minimum passing score is 70 %, candidates who score highest may be considered for advancement in the recruitment process.
- Written Examination – 70 % (Section Weight – 50 %)
- Oral Interview – 70 % (Section Weight – 50 %)
- Medical Examination – May be required to determine medical fitness for the duties assigned to the position.
