OverviewFull-time position available on or after May 4, 2026 for the building maintenance department. Under immediate supervision, in a trainee capacity, the Locksmith Apprentice performs a variety of progressively more complex duties related to the locksmith trade, including installing, repairing, remodeling and maintaining manual and automated locks and lock‑ing systems. The role is a two‑year apprenticeship.
Position SummaryThe Locksmith Apprentice will install, repair, remodel and maintain a wide range of lock and security systems, issue and cut keys, maintain records, and support the operation of a locksmith shop. The apprenticeship includes training in both mechanical and electronic lock systems and may require additional certification as needed.
Job Duties- Install, repair, remodel and maintain manual and automated locks, locking systems and security devices.
- Maintain, repair and adjust all types of locks and their components for campus buildings, rooms, furniture and vehicles.
- Cut and issue keys, and program and issue key cards when required.
- Implement, troubleshoot, repair and program computerized access control systems.
- Upgrade, troubleshoot and maintain security systems that interface with locking and other building systems.
- Maintain and repair automatic door openers, door closing units and control gates.
- Service and maintain safes.
- Estimate cost, time and materials for locksmith projects.
- Participate in the maintenance and operations of a locksmith shop.
- Purchase, store and maintain lock systems, hardware and materials.
- Maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.
- Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and applicable regulations.
- Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
- Maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed, and comply with training guidelines documentation.
- Prepare standard reports.
- Consult and work with other trades workers.
- Complete additional training and/or certification as required for professional development.
- Provide support to other areas as directed by the appropriate administrator.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Education and Experience: High school diploma, California GED, or equivalent. Includes one year of high school algebra with a grade of "C" or better.
- Completion of a related certification or vocational training in Locksmith.
- Experience in an educational or academic institution.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read, write, and perform duties at an appropriate level.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Ability to learn the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the locksmith trade.
- Ability to work in a trainee capacity and demonstrate continued progress and improvement.
- Knowledge of access and control systems, locks, fastening devices, electrical locking and security systems, and related hardware.
- Knowledge of applicable state codes, including fire exits, door hardware and fastening devices.
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required.
Anticipated salary will be $3,481 (step
1) per month plus excellent paid benefits. Future increases, including step advancement, are subject to contract negotiations. Full classification range: $3,481 (step
1) – $5,087 (step
4) per month. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
