JOB SUMMARY

Under immediate supervision, to work with and assist an Electrical Lineworker, receiving increasing instruction and experience in the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution systems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
  • Work with and assist an Electrical Lineworker by providing tools and materials.
  • Assist in setting and guying poles and in pulling cables, wires and other conductors.
  • During training, perform progressively more difficult and technical duties.
  • Initially, become proficient in the use of basic Electrical Lineworker tools and equipment such as skinning knife, side cutting pliers, body belt, safety belt, connectors, climbers, straps, rubber gloves, hot sticks and pads.
  • Climb poles and towers.
  • Perform mechanical operations such as tightening bolts, changing steel members, installing pole steps, and trimming trees for wire clearance.
  • Make cuts and tops on low and progressively higher voltage lines.
  • During advanced stages of apprenticeship, under instruction and close supervision, perform basic Electrical Lineworker duties on power poles.
  • Splice and string lines.
  • Install crossarms.
  • Hang transformers and cutouts.
  • Set meters.
  • Follow OSHA and TID safety requirements; and DOT and Cal-Trans rules for safe traffic control.
  • Respond to emergency situations.
  • Transmission and distribution line patrolling.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the skills and abilities would be:

Education
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience
  • None required.
Skills and Abilities

Interpersonal and Communication. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Technical and Analytical. Knowledge of basic electricity; and fundamental safety regulations and first aid. Ability to acquire skill in the use of tools, equipment, safe working habits and techniques of electrical lineworker trade; learn the principles of electrical theory as applied to electrical circuits and wiring systems; and learn to operate electrical line equipment.

Necessary

Special Requirements
  • Possession of an appropriate California driver's license.
  • Must furnish own hand tools.

Every Turlock Irrigation District Apprentice Electrical Lineworker is required to attend after hour classes. The classes will begin after the employee qualifies for the Apprenticeship Program and will be continuous until the apprentice obtains a journey level classification. Employees in the Apprenticeship Program attending after hour classes, shall not be compensated any additional pay.

SELECTION CRITERIA
  • Written Examination - 70% required to obtain a passing score
  • Practical / Field Test - 70% required to obtain a passing score
  • Oral Interview - 70% required to obtain a passing score

This position may require a medical examination to determine medical fitness for performing the duties assigned to the position or classification.

Note

All qualified candidates must furnish their own industry approved climbing tools (climbing belt, fall restriction device and positioning lanyard) for the day of field-testing. Furthermore, proper work attire (jeans, long sleeve shirt and climbing boots - or work boots with heels) must be worn the day of field-testing. NO EXCEPTIONS.

The District will furnish a hard hat, leather work gloves and safety glasses if a qualified candidate does not possess these.
