Job Description:
Lighting Services Engineer
Location:
Tuscaloosa, AL (Hybrid)
This role supports outdoor Lighting Services projects across the Tuscaloosa and Western Division territory. The engineer will partner with internal sales representatives to assess prospective lighting installations, perform field evaluations, determine how selected lighting equipment can be electrically served, prepare cost estimates, and develop construction-ready job packets. The role requires significant independent fieldwork, strong organization, and the ability to apply engineering methodology to each request.
This position has the potential for permanent conversion based on performance and business needs.
- Partner with sales representatives on outdoor lighting requests and attend proposed job sites for technical evaluation.
- Inspect poles and existing infrastructure, using field equipment to assess wiring and space availability for new equipment.
- Determine how selected lights and poles will be electrically served and prepare multiple pricing estimates.
- Develop construction-ready job packets after a customer contract is signed, using the company’s mapping system to create prints.
- Manage approximately 20 to 25 active requests at a time, working independently across field and office settings.
- Ensure designs and job classifications comply with applicable technical and financial requirements.
- Coordinate primarily with internal sales personnel, with minimal direct customer interaction.
- Maintain accurate project documentation, including drawings, specifications, and as-built records.
Education: A completed Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required. Candidates from electrical, mechanical, civil, industrial, aerospace, or comparable engineering programs will be considered. An engineering technology degree alone does not meet this requirement.
Experience: This is an entry‑level or early-career position. The ideal candidate will be a self‑motivated, trustworthy, and outgoing problem solver comfortable working independently, including spending significant time alone in the field.
Skills: Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, organization, and multitasking skills are required. The role demands initiative, dependability, curiosity, and a willingness to ask follow‑up questions to understand the reasoning behind technical decisions.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with outdoor lighting, electrical distribution, utility engineering, field engineering, or construction design.
- Previous experience with internal systems such as JETS and Maximo.
- Experience creating computer‑based prints or designs using CAD, Bluebeam, GIS, or another mapping or drafting platform.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Exposure to Power BI or AI tools such as ChatGPT or Copilot.
- Currently resides in or near Tuscaloosa and is comfortable with a field‑heavy work environment.
