Job Summary:

The Computer Technician will support the Tuscaloosa County School System with the maintenance, and repair of all computers, software and technology related equipment in the schools and support facilities. The Computer Technician will also provide support and assistance with the maintenance and operation of the local area and wide area networks, paging, VoIP phone system and other instructional technology devices as per oversight by the Information Technology Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Process and update IT service requests in an effective and timely manner.
  • Diagnose hardware and software issues (Windows, Apple, IoT devices).
  • Install and configure new IT equipment (Printers, Windows PCs, iMacs, Mac Books, iPads, Interactive Display Panels).
  • Install and configure software applications on Windows and Apple computers.
  • Communicate effectively with non-technical faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Utilize Mobile Device Management (MDM), imaging, and software installation tools to manage IT Systems and Devices.
  • Perform repairs, upgrades, and routine maintenance in accordance with IT guidelines (installing software; applying OS upgrades/patches; replacing disk drives, circuit boards and other hardware components).
  • Rack and connect network related equipment, cables, and communication devices.
  • Follow supervisor or assigned task managers instructions and perform all work assigned.
  • Execute all other task and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Technology, Superintendent and/or the Deputy Superintendent.
  • Participate in training programs, professional development, or other learning to increase skill and proficiency related to job performance and leadership.
  • Possess or develop knowledge of current trends and practices in K-12 education.
  • Demonstrate the ability to multi-task, delegate, and prioritize those tasks appropriately.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • Model and maintain high ethical standards.
  • Respond, maintain, and/or submit required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Adhere to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Report absences and take leaves in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  • Perform other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1 year minimum basic IT or comparable experience. Preferred 3 years' experience in a similar position.
  • Excellent Customer Service Skills.
  • Experience with Windows, Mac OS X, Apple iOS operating systems.
  • Experience with diagnosing, repairing and solving computer hardware, printer and software problems.
  • Experience with basic troubleshooting of devices on wireless and wired networks (DHCP, Static IPs, DNS, Ping, MAC addresses, IP addresses, Subnet Mask, IP Gateway).
  • Knowledge basic troubleshooting for web applications in web browsers (Edge, Chrome, Firefox).
  • Experience with office automation applications, including Outlook, Microsoft Office, and One Drive.
  • Prefer candidates with formal technical training experience, education, or certifications.
  • Prefer candidates with experience in Microsoft 365, Power Shell, and MDM.
  • Prefer candidates with experience using Power School Student Information System and educational software (e.g., Follett Destiny, Clever, Schoology).
  • Work with little direction and supervision toward the timely completion of projects.
  • Work flexibly to make time for unplanned assignments and adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills, including the ability to adapt technical language to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or information.
  • Physical mobility, dexterity, strength, and visual acuity to perform essential duties of position. This includes significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling.
  • Ability to work in areas which may include, but not limited to, loud noises, and/or extremes of heat or cold.
  • Operating a motor vehicle and hand power tools is required.
  • The job requires that you must provide reliable personal transportation to work sites and meet all Federal, State or Local laws concerning vehicle registration and insurance requirements.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
