Overview

The purpose of this classification is to perform work functions associated with maintaining city parks, buildings, grounds, landscaping, and building maintenance. The following duties are normal for this classification. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Specific duties listed may not be required for all positions within this classification but are determined by the normal requirements for the position.

Responsibilities
  • Perform manual work functions associated with groundskeeping and maintenance tasks, specifically: planting, fertilizing, watering, mowing, edging, raking, trimming, or weeding landscaped areas.
  • Remove trash/branches from grounds; clean/sweep walkways and parking lots.
  • Dig holes/trenches and maintain sprinkler system.
  • Perform construction, maintenance and repair to buildings, equipment, and tools, specifically: cleaning, painting, light carpentry, trash disposal, replace light bulbs, and supply paper products.
  • Perform housekeeping tasks, specifically: clean/maintain restrooms, shop areas, sweep parking lots/walkways, empty trash containers, vacuum, mop or wax floor surfaces, dust furniture, and clean windows.
  • Operate/maintain various machinery, equipment and tools used in maintenance activities, specifically: service trucks, push mowers, weed eaters, blowers, sprayers, hoes, shovels, rakes, chainsaws, edgers, carpenter's tools, and cleaning tools/supplies.
  • Inspect all equipment to ensure safe and proper operating condition prior to use; inventory equipment, materials, and supplies; ensure tools and equipment remain clean and in good working order.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks, specifically: cleaning and servicing trucks and equipment; report faulty equipment and broken tools for repair or replacement.
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning and groundskeeping supplies.
  • Perform maintenance on service trucks, specifically: cleaning, maintaining fluid level, and checking tires.
  • Respond to requests for information from officials, employees, the public or other individuals.
  • Transport equipment, supplies, and parts.
  • Communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio; provide information; take and relay messages; respond to requests for service, after hour emergencies, and callouts.
  • Incorporate continuous quality improvement principles in day-to-day activities.
  • Meet regular attendance requirements.
  • Maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers, and citizens.
  • Accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in a timely manner.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred; six months of experience preferably in general landscaping, construction/maintenance work and/or manual labor work.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • This job classification is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug screens.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to operate a variety of equipment including carpenter tools, mechanics tools, service truck, shovels, weed eaters, blowers, cleaning tools, etc. Physical demand requirements for some positions within this classification may at times be at levels of those for heavy work.

    Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics of data, people, or things.
  • Interpersonal communication:
    Requires the ability to speak with and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including giving/receiving assignments and/or directions to/from co-workers, assistants, managers, or supervisors as well as communicating with the general public.

    Requires ability to read a variety of groundskeeping documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures. Requires the ability to write basic job-related documentation and reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and well-modulated voice.
  • Intelligence:
    Requires the ability to learn and understand groundskeeping principles and techniques, to understand departmental policies and procedures, to make independent judgments in absence of supervision, and to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Verbal aptitude:
    Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Numerical aptitude:
    Requires the ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide, and determine time and weight.
