Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced
Additive Manufacturing R&D Specialist
to support advanced research and development involving
laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) metal additive manufacturing
at our university partner facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The successful candidate will have hands-on experience with metal LPBF and a strong interest in developing new materials, processes, applications, and technical capabilities. This position will work closely with university researchers and internal technical teams to conduct experiments, evaluate results, develop innovative approaches, and advance the state of the art in metal additive manufacturing.

The individual will also serve as a technical resource for similar R&D activities at other locations across the country, helping coordinate research efforts and train technical personnel on LPBF systems and associated research methods.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct
    research and experimental development
    using laser powder bed fusion systems for metal additive manufacturing.
  • Develop and investigate new materials, processing strategies, build parameters, and additive manufacturing techniques.
  • Plan, execute, document, and analyze experimental builds and research studies.
  • Characterize and evaluate printed materials and components using appropriate analytical and testing methods.
  • Identify technical challenges and develop innovative solutions related to LPBF processing and metal additive manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with university researchers, engineers, scientists, and technical teams on R&D programs.
  • Develop research documentation, technical reports, presentations, and recommendations based on experimental results.
  • Serve as a technical resource for LPBF R&D activities at other locations and assist with the development of common research practices.
  • Occasionally travel domestically to support R&D activities, training, equipment-related efforts, and technical collaboration.
Required Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship required
    due to the Department of War-focused nature of the work.
  • Master's or PhD in
    Materials Science, Metallurgy/Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Additive Manufacturing
    , or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated hands-on
    research or development experience with laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) metal 3-D printing
    .
  • Understanding of metal additive manufacturing processes, materials, process parameters, and experimental methods.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a university research environment while independently managing assigned R&D activities.
  • Willingness to travel domestically on an occasional basis.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience conducting experimental research with industrial or research-grade LPBF equipment.
  • Experience with
    process development, materials development, parameter optimization, or additive manufacturing research
    .
  • Knowledge of metal microstructure, metallurgy, materials characterization, or mechanical behavior.
  • Experience with advanced metals such as aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, nickel-based alloys, or other engineering alloys.
  • Experience analyzing experimental data and developing technical conclusions from research results.
  • Experience in
    defense, aerospace, national laboratory, or university R&D environments
    .
  • Publications, conference presentations, patents, or other demonstrated contributions to additive manufacturing research are a plus.
