Job Summary
The Transmission Groundman is an entry-level position that supports the construction, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage transmission power lines. This role involves performing essential manual labor, assisting line crews with daily operations, and learning the fundamentals of transmission line work. The Groundman plays a critical role in maintaining safe, organized, and efficient job sites while developing the skills needed to advance within the transmission trade.
Job Duties and Responsibilities- Perform various manual labor tasks in the construction and maintenance of transmission power lines.
- Assemble materials on the ground and hoist them into work areas using hand lines.
- Assist crew members with pole holes, trenching, and back filling using shovels and hand tools.
- Flag traffic and set up work zones to ensure the safety of both the public and the crew.
- Maintain organization of tools, materials, and equipment on work vehicles.
- Clean up and restore job sites upon completion of work.
- Receive training in the operation of trucks, equipment, and tools as skills progress.
- Participate in safety training, first aid, and related instruction
. - Work safely on energized and de-energized transmission systems under supervision.
- Assist in stringing wire, setting poles and anchors, and framing structures
. - Maintain company vehicles, equipment, PPE, and tools in safe working condition.
- Learn and apply rigging, knot tying, and hand line techniques
. - Support crews with bucket rescue/escape training, grounding procedures, and cover-up practices
. - Perform all other duties as assigned to support transmission projects.
- High School Diploma or GED required
. - Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit within 30 days of employment.
- CDL preferred; required to obtain within the first 90 days.
- Ability to perform rigorous physical labor in outdoor environments.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn:
Rigging techniques, hand line use, and knot tying
. - Proper use and maintenance of hand tools and ladders
. - Grounding procedures, minimum approach distances, and flag/tag rules
. - PPE use, inspection, and rubber goods handling
. - Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces
. - Must pass drug, alcohol, background, MVR, and physical checks
. - Willing and able to:
Travel long distances on short notice
. - Work extended hours, weekends, and overtime as required.
- Work in all weather conditions
, including inclement weather. - Strong communication skills with the ability to follow directions and work in a team environment

- Must be able to lift and carry over 50 pounds regularly.
- Frequent bending, standing, stooping, kneeling, and climbing
. - Ability to climb wood and steel structures using appropriate gear.
- Capable of repetitive hand and arm movements while handling tools and materials.
- Ability to work at elevated heights and near energized equipment using PPE.
- Must maintain visual acuity to identify materials and hazards.
- Ability to perform rigorous physical labor outdoors for extended periods

, including heat, cold, and storms. - Exposure to electrical hazards, construction equipment, and noisy environments
. - Regular travel to various job sites with occasional overnight stays
. - Extended work hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
