Automotive Repair Technician

The purpose of this classification is to perform work functions associated with the repair of motor vehicles and routine maintenance of motor vehicles, motorcycles, boats and other standard and specialized automotive equipment.

The following duties are normal for this classification. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Specific duties listed may not be required for all positions within this classification but are determined by the normal requirements for the particular position.

Performs special testing/functions from the scan tool (CEL,ETC.). Must be familiar with common DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) definitions.

Diagnose and repair engine operation, motor mounts, timing chains, gasket/seal replacement and repairs.

Performs the following repair tasks: bearings and universal joints, air conditioners, welding parts and light fabrication work, starters, generators, carburetors, alternators, and radiators.

Must possess knowledge of small engine maintenance, diagnosis, and repairs

Diagnose and repair engine cooling system operation, such as radiator, cooling fan, water pump, hoses, thermostat, etc.

Utilize computer aid programs to obtain diagnostic information such as wiring diagrams, code descriptions, and testing procedures.

Diagnose and repair electrical system operations. Must possess a working knowledge of fuse boxes, relays, wires, and wiring diagrams.

Diagnose and repair starting/charging/battery system operations such as alternators and troubleshoot starter issues.

Diagnose and repair air conditioning/heating system operations such as condense, Schrader valve, high/low pressure lines, and leak detectors. Includes air conditioning compressors, expansion valves, orifice tubes, and accumulators.

Diagnose and repair suspension system operations such as alignments, bushings, control arms, tie rod ends, trailing arms, coil springs, leaf springs, trac bar, shocks, and struts.

Diagnose and repair drive train system operations such as transmission, transfer case, drive shafts, cv axles, axle bearings, wheel bearings, etc.

Diagnose and repair brake system operations, including ABS (Anti-lock brake systems), traction control systems, and electronic/vacuum brake assist systems.

Diagnose and repair fuel system operations such as pumps, filters, removing fuel pump systems (in tank & high-pressure pumps), fuel injectors, fuel lines, and rails.

Removes, installs, diagnose, and repair of wheels and tires. Mounts and balances tires. Monitors wear patterns and ensure proper torque and proper tire pressure, Must possess knowledge of tire pressure monitoring system to include programming and recalibrating tire pressure monitors.

Diagnose and repair of window regulator and switch operation. Install windows and repair window tracks.

Must possess knowledge of factory light operating systems. Diagnose and repair brake lights and headlights.

Performs routine maintenance on fuel island.

Removes, installs, disassembles, reassembles seats as well as all electronic components that go along with select safety features.

Possess ability to operate forklifts.

Must possess knowledge of operating automotive lifts, motorcycle lifts, jacks, and jack stands safely,

Performs preventative maintenance tasks such as fluid changes and filter changes. Replaces belts, hoses, spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coils, etc.

Maintains effective operation of service truck; keeps vehicle/equipment service and maintenance records.

Prepares and/or receives forms, logs, reports or other documents associated with daily responsibilities of this position; processes and forwards.

Performs general cleaning/housekeeping tasks associated with maintaining shop areas.

Recommends policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of quality services by the department.

Incorporates continuous quality improvement principles in day-to-day activities.

Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in a timely manner.

Must meet regular attendance requirements.

Must be able to maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers and citizens.

Performs other related duties as required.

High school diploma or GED required; ASE or comparable certification is preferred; three years of experience in automotive repair or a related field required. Must obtain and maintain certification in freon recovery within six months of date of hire. Must possess and maintain an Alabama driver's license. Must obtain and maintain an Alabama Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, within twelve (12) months of employment.
