About the Project/Clinic

AMI will be assisting in providing medical staff to the Central Alabama VA Healthcare System to help deliver compassionate and quality healthcare to patients in the area.

Job Summary

AMI is seeking Board Certified/Board Eligible Psychiatrists to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art psychiatric services to eligible Veterans in the Central Alabama VA Healthcare System. Services are delivered onsite and must meet or exceed nationally recognized standards of care as established by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), The Joint Commission, and VA clinical policies.

This position supports both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services and includes regular clinical hours and required on-call coverage.

Duties/Responsibilities Inpatient Psychiatry
  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning
  • Manage admissions, daily rounds, treatment adjustments, and discharge planning
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary mental health teams
  • Complete all required medical record documentation
  • Provide care for ward patients (1C/1D Psychiatry Service)
  • Evaluate new referrals and conduct follow-up visits
  • Manage severely mentally ill patients
  • Provide E-consult evaluations
  • Ensure patients are seen within 30 days per VA access standards
  • Maintain a daily caseload of approximately 6–6.5 bookable patient hours
Peer Review & Quality Activities
  • Participate in peer review processes including:
    • Tort claims
    • Mental health case reviews
    • Benefit appeals
    • Participate in quality improvement meetings and committee work
    • Attend prescriber meetings (monthly) and required staff meetings
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Participate in Quality Management/Performance Improvement initiatives
  • Complete QA/QI documentation
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation in VA Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Report patient safety incidents within 24 hours via VA reporting systems
  • Assist with monthly call schedule preparation
  • Support education and supervision of Health Professions Trainees (HPTs)
Standards of Care
  • Care must meet or exceed:
    • American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)
    • Joint Commission standards
    • American Hospital Association standards
    • VA/VHA directives and policies

The job duties are flexible and subject to change depending upon operational needs.

Required Skills/Abilities
  • Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work on a team.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Must be able to successfully complete the AMI Credentialing Process.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications
Education & Experience
  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school
  • Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. State or Territory
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry (ABPN)
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification required
  • DEA registration required
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI) required
