Biology Academic Advisor
The Biology Academic Advisor at Tuskegee University provides comprehensive, student-centered academic advising for undergraduate Biology majors. The advisor plays a critical role in supporting student success across a diverse population, including pre-health, pre-professional, and STEM-focused students. This position supports retention, progression, and timely graduation by assisting students with academic planning, navigating high-demand courses, and connecting students to research, experiential learning, and career pathways.
The advisor will also collaborate closely with departmental leadership to support course scheduling, enrollment management, and curriculum coordination.
- Provide specialized, major-specific academic advising and advocacy to an assigned caseload of Biology students to support retention, progression, and timely graduation.
- Guide students in course selection, registration, degree requirements, and academic policy interpretation.
- Assist students in developing individualized academic plans aligned with educational and career goals, including pre-health and pre-professional pathways.
- Support students in navigating university procedures such as course withdrawals, repeat policies, academic probation, and appeals.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of Biology curricula.
- Serve on departmental committees as needed.
- Monitor and assess student academic progress using institutional data systems to identify trends and inform interventions.
- Utilize proactive, appreciative advising strategies to identify and address barriers to student success.
- Implement targeted outreach to at‑risk students and connect them with appropriate academic and support resources.
- Collaborate with faculty, department leadership, and student support services to coordinate holistic support for students.
- Contribute to departmental and university initiatives focused on improving retention, persistence, and graduation rates.
- Develop and facilitate workshops, presentations, and information sessions on academic success strategies, study skills, and degree planning.
- Collaborate with the Road from Early Achievement to a Career High (REACH) center to offer tutorial services for high-demand biology courses.
- Support new student orientation, recruitment efforts, and engagement initiatives within the Biology Department.
- Serve as a resource for students, families, faculty, and staff regarding advising processes and academic requirements.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential student advising records in compliance with FERPA and university policies.
- Utilize the institutional data systems to document advising interactions, track student progress, and manage academic records.
- Prepare reports for the Department Head and Dean on advising outcomes, student progress, and retention metrics.
- Ensure accuracy and integrity of student data within institutional systems.
- Participate in departmental, college, and university committees, advising councils, and task forces as assigned.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current with best practices in academic advising, student success, and retention.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the Biology Department and Tuskegee University.
- Master’s degree in a relevant field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree preferred.
- Working knowledge of the basic principles of academic advising and the capacity to learn all facets of specific degree programs.
