Position SummaryThe STEM Program Intern will support educational programming and outreach initiatives at Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, focusing on aviation, innovation, and the Freedom 250 initiative. This role connects the historic achievements of the Tuskegee Airmen to modern STEM learning experiences for youth and the public. The intern will assist in developing and facilitating hands-on STEM and interpretive activities while supporting daily visitor services operations.
Through these efforts, the intern will help create engaging visitor experiences, highlight the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, and inspire the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Key ResponsibilitiesSTEM Education & Program Delivery
- Assist with planning and facilitation of STEM-based educational programs
- Support hands-on activities related to aviation, engineering, and innovation
- Connect historical content to modern STEM concepts
- Co-lead and eventually lead STEM workshops for youth and visitors
Visitor Engagement & Services
- Welcome and orient visitors to the site, exhibits, and programs
- Provide accurate and engaging information about the Tuskegee Airmen and Moton Field
- Assist with daily visitor center operations
Freedom 250 Programming Support
- Assist with special programs and commemorative events
- Integrate themes of innovation, leadership, and service into programming
Youth & Community Engagement
- Engage K–12 students and community groups through interactive learning
- Support outreach to increase participation in STEM programming
- Foster inclusive and culturally responsive learning environments
Curriculum Development & Materials
- Assist in developing lesson plans and activity guides
- Prepare and organize materials for STEM demonstrations
Documentation & Reporting
- Track participation and program outcomes
- Collect feedback from participants and staff
- Assist with reporting and program evaluation
Collaboration & Professional Development
- Work closely with NPS staff, educators, and GYF program managers
- Participate in weekly check-ins and InternXL professional development sessions
- Hands-on experience in NPS visitor services and interpretation
- Exposure to aviation history and the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen
- Experience in youth education and community engagement
- Professional development in STEM outreach, education, and visitor-centered programming
- Direct guidance from NPS staff and educators
- Support from GYF program managers through check-ins and professional development sessions
- Background or interest in STEM fields, education, aviation, or related disciplines
- Passion for working with youth and community audiences
- Strong communication and facilitation skills
- Interest in history and connecting it to modern innovation
- Ability to lead activities and engage diverse audiences
