Position Summary:

The School Resource Police Officer is critical in ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors within the school environment. This position involves building positive relationships with students, staff, and the community while providing law enforcement services and fostering a safe and inclusive educational atmosphere.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma (bachelor’s degree in criminal justice preferred)
  • Certification as a law enforcement officer in the State of Alabama
  • Valid driver’s license in the State of Alabama
  • Fingerprint clearance with the Alabama State Department of Education prior to the start date

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Patrol school district campuses to prevent and respond to criminal activities, disturbances, or safety hazards
  • Enforce applicable local, state, and federal laws within the school district's jurisdiction
  • Investigate incidents, file reports, and work with local law enforcement agencies when necessary
  • Maintain a strong presence during school hours, special events, and extracurricular activities to deter potential threats
  • Build and maintain a rapport with students, staff, and parents to promote trust and open communication
  • Provide guidance and assistance in emergency situations, including lockdowns, evacuations, and first-aid response
  • Collaborate with school administrators to develop and implement safety protocols and crisis management plans
  • Develop positive relationships with students through mentoring, counseling, and educational programs
  • Conduct educational presentations and workshops on topics such as drug awareness, bullying prevention, and internet safety
  • Serve as a resource for students and staff to address concerns and provide guidance on safety-related issues
  • Work closely with teachers, counselors, and school administrators to identify and address security and safety concerns
  • Assist in developing and implementing proactive strategies to maintain a safe school environment
  • Serve as a liaison between the school district and local law enforcement agencies
  • Stay current on relevant laws, regulations, and best practices related to school safety and law enforcement
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge

  • Ability to follow both oral and written directions and instructions. Ability to communicate clearly, orally, and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively present information to others and respond to students, parents, and staff. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student matters. Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities. Ability to be professional in appearance, attitude, and demeanor. Ability to be punctual and comply with a precise work schedule.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Knowledge of child development and especially of characteristics of students in the age group assigned. Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply Alabama laws and regulations.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee must also talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may be required to use their hands to finger, handle, feel, and/or reach. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
