Position Summary
The Cybersecurity Specialist is responsible for protecting the school district’s technology systems, networks, devices, applications, and data from cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities. This position monitors security systems, investigates incidents, implements security measures, and ensures compliance with cybersecurity standards and data privacy regulations. The Cybersecurity Specialist also provides cybersecurity awareness training and collaborates with district leadership and technology personnel to maintain a secure digital environment that supports teaching, learning, and district operations.

Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, information technology, computer science, or a related field
- Minimum of three years of successful experience in cybersecurity, network administration, or information systems support
- Industry certifications such as Security+, CISSP, CEH, Network+, or equivalent (preferred)
- Knowledge of cybersecurity tools, firewalls, endpoint protection systems, network security, and cloud-based systems
- Knowledge of FERPA, CIPA, data privacy laws, and cybersecurity best practices
- Valid Alabama driver’s license and acceptable driving record
- Fingerprint clearance with the Alabama State Department of Education prior to the start date
- Monitor district systems, networks, and devices for cybersecurity threats, vulnerabilities, and suspicious activity
- Implement cybersecurity tools including firewalls, antivirus software, endpoint protection systems, and multifactor authentication
- Investigate cybersecurity incidents including phishing attempts, malware infections, unauthorized access, and ransomware threats
- Conduct vulnerability assessments, security audits, and risk analyses to identify and address security weaknesses
- Maintain incident response, disaster recovery, and business continuity procedures
- Assist with securing district infrastructure including servers, wireless systems, cloud platforms, and remote access systems
- Monitor security logs, alerts, and audit reports to identify potential threats and ensure compliance
- Assist with management of user accounts, permissions, password policies, and access controls
- Develop and maintain cybersecurity policies, procedures, and acceptable use guidelines
- Provide cybersecurity awareness training and support to employees and students regarding safe technology practices
- Collaborate with technology staff, administrators, and vendors regarding cybersecurity operations and security incidents
- Maintain documentation related to cybersecurity incidents, compliance activities, and remediation efforts
- Research emerging cybersecurity threats and recommend improvements to district security practices
- Support cybersecurity compliance requirements related to student data privacy and district technology operations
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Technology or district administrators

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee must also talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may be required to use their hands to finger, handle, feel, and/or reach. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
