Position Summary

Certified Police Officer at Tuskegee University Police Department. This position is eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus and a starting pay of $58,000. Retired Certified Police Officers are encouraged to apply. The announcement is continuous and open.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol the university in a mobile unit or by foot patrol to prevent and/or reduce criminal activity, preserve the peace, and apprehend offenders; respond to emergency and non-emergency situations; conduct preliminary investigations of crimes and attempted crimes; conduct searches and seizures; locate and preserve evidence and crime scenes; prepare reports; execute arrests when necessary. Patrols the university to prevent property loss due to fire or flooding.

    Renders aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries. (50%)
  • Monitors, notes, reports and investigates suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol areas. Communicates with the public to gain their confidence and to enhance crime prevention and law enforcement efforts while conducting building checks and/or vehicle checks for security purposes. (20%)
  • Conducts traffic crash investigations, prepares reports and submits findings to supervisor. Photographs or draws diagrams of crime or accident scenes and interviews principals and eyewitnesses. Monitors traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving procedures. Patrols university streets for traffic violations; issues uniform citations to traffic violators; controls traffic congestion; monitors and directs traffic and parking activity for events on campus.

  • Provides assistance to other law enforcement agencies by identifying/locating suspects who may be students or employees of the University; executing warrants/arrests, recovering stolen property, etc. (5%)
  • Maintains proficiency in the daily operation of police software, ensuring that all reports are complete with required documentation, and submitted as required before end of tour of duty. (5%)
  • Inspects and maintains departmental equipment in good working order, i.e., service weapons, vehicles, uniforms, leather gear, handcuffs, badges, personal protection equipment, etc. (5%)
  • Keeps abreast of University policies, rules & regulations (to include student codes), current statutes, updates, standard operating procedures and/or departmental general orders to promote efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance in the performance of duties, special tasks and assignments. Seeks and/or creates professional development opportunities that enhance individual as well as agency growth. (5%)
  • Testifies in court, administrative hearings and other criminal proceedings as required by law. (3%)
  • Performs other related duties as required. (2%)
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must possess certification as an Alabama certified law enforcement officer (APOST)
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of a law enforcement officer, tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running and climbing. The duties may also involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and/or people, such as in the event of chasing and/or subduing a resisting suspect(s). Some tasks are performed with the potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements including, but not limited to, heat, humidity, inclement weather, loud noises, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, violent behavior, weapons, explosives, traffic and animals.

Tasks include working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, golf carts, ATVs and material handling, where extremely heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property.
