Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team at Morningside Elementary School as a Special Education Behavior Para for our Behavioral Program. This full-time position is designed for those who are passionate about supporting students with diverse needs, particularly those requiring behavioral support. The ideal candidate will work closely with special education teachers and other staff to create a positive and inclusive learning environment, helping students achieve their academic and social goals.

Responsibilities
  • Assist special education teachers in implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavior intervention plans (BIPs) for students with special needs.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students exhibiting challenging behaviors, fostering positive behavior and social skills.
  • Monitor and document student progress, behavior incidents, and interventions, providing feedback to teachers and specialists.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and parents to develop and implement effective strategies for behavior management and academic success.
  • Facilitate a safe and supportive classroom environment, promoting respect, cooperation, and positive interactions among students.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge related to special education and behavior management.
  • Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and classroom activities that meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Support students during transitions, lunch, recess, and other non-classroom activities, ensuring their safety and well‑being.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with students, families, and staff.
  • Must pass background checks and meet all state and district requirements for working in a school setting.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree or higher in education, psychology, social work, or a related field is preferred.
  • Requires two years of college, an AA degree, or successful completion of the Para Pro Assessment (Praxis Exam).
  • Previous experience working with children in a special education setting or behavior program is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of behavior management techniques and strategies for supporting students with emotional and behavioral challenges.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping students succeed academically and socially.
  • Ability to maintain a calm and positive demeanor in challenging situations.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid is preferred or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Must pass background checks and meet all state and district requirements for working in a school setting.

This is an “at will” position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The employment “at will” policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and approved by the Board of Trustees of District 411.

All recommendations are tentative offers. Employment is contingent upon board approval and successful completion of federal background check and drug‑free workplace pre‑employment screening.
