Senior Radiation Detection Scientist
The Senior Radiation Detection Scientist will lead research, design, modeling, development, and validation of advanced sensing technologies for nuclear reactor instrumentation and radiation monitoring as part of a business development strategy. The role combines detector physics, computational modeling, signal processing, and product development to create and manufacture neutron and gamma-ray detectors.
This position requires a strong background in applied physics and the ability to translate scientific principles into commercially successful products through simulation, experimentation, data analysis, and cross-functional engineering collaboration.
Responsibilities- Design and develop novel neutron and gamma radiation detectors for BWR, SMR and PWR nuclear reactors.
- Analyze and model detector response, gas gain behavior, pulse formation, and electronic signal characteristics.
- Optimize detector performance, sensitivity, gamma rejection, energy resolution, and count rate capabilities.
- Design and perform laboratory testing, calibration and qualification programs.
- Evaluate and advance the "state of the art" neutron detection technologies for business development applications.
- Convert customer requirements into system and product specifications.
- Lead multidisciplinary R&D efforts from concept through commercialization.
- Generate technical reports, patent disclosures, white papers, and peer-reviewed publications.
- Present technical results to customers, management, and industry conferences.
- Support proposal development and customer-funded research initiatives.
- Ph.D. or M.S. in Physics, Applied Physics, Nuclear Engineering or related field.
- 8+ years of experience in sensor modeling and development, radiation detection.
- Strong understanding of:
- Radiation interactions with matter
- Detector physics
- Neutron and gamma detection
- Signal processing
- Statistical analysis
- Experience with experimental design, analyzing datasets and report writing.
- Strong technical communication and leadership skills.
- Experience with gas filled neutron detector technologies.
- Experience with Monte Carlo transport simulation and detector modeling
- Familiarity with nuclear reactor instrumentation and homeland security systems.
- Demonstrated innovation through patents, product launches, or technical publications.
