Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
This is a full-time, union position with benefits and time off, upon meeting eligibility requirements. Employees start out at pay range Level 1 and progress through six pay range levels.
Job Responsibilities- Repairs and maintains machinery and mechanical equipment such as, but not limited to, all City fleet vehicles and equipment, engines, motors, pneumatic tools, pumps, tractors, backhoes, and loaders.
- Diagnose and repair all systems on large trucks and equipment with the use of scan tools, laptops and various other devices.
- Make repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
- Repairs diesel engines and emissions systems.
- Uses computers for various functions.
- Reads and interprets manufacturer manuals and electrical schematics.
- Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts.
- Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections.
- Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements.
- Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments.
- Repairs or replaces defective parts.
- Installs special functional and structural parts in devices, lubricates and cleans parts.
- Starts devices to test their performance.
- Operates various sized vehicles including 5-ton dump trucks used for snow and ice control.
- Regular attendance is required.
- Troubleshoots malfunctions in the equipment and makes needed repairs.
- Performs routine maintenance checks on such things as fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires and clutches; changes filters and oil, and lubricates vehicles and motor driven equipment.
- Maintains service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment, using fleet maintenance and management software.
- Must participate in all city-sponsored training and continuing education activities including classroom, manufacturer provided, seminars etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED), certification from an accredited mechanical training program and three to five (3-5) years of verifiable related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Must possess a minimum of ASE, Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications T2-T6 (T1-T8, Master Technician preferred).
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to recognize potentially unsafe conditions and behaviors and correct them in a positive and appropriate manner.
- Ability to safely use oxygen/acetylene torches and plasma cutters.
- Ability to safely perform metal inert gas (mig) and stick welding.
- Prepares work orders and cost materials estimates.
- Must possess a valid State of Ohio, Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to operate pick‑up truck and 5‑ton truck snowplows.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States.
