This is a seasonal or part-time, non‑union position.
Position SummaryResponsible for planning and teaching swim lessons and water‑safety skills to participants of various ages and abilities, using the American Red Cross Learn‑to‑Swim curriculum. Ensures a safe aquatic environment, provides positive guidance, and upholds American Red Cross standards throughout all instructional activities.
Job Responsibilities- Plan, organize and instruct American Red Cross swim lessons following approved American Red Cross standards, curriculum, and teaching methods.
- Adapt teaching approaches based on participant age, ability, and learning styles to ensure progress and mastery of required skills.
- Provide clear verbal instruction, demonstrations, and corrective feedback to help swimmers gain water competency.
- Provide safe supervision of students in and around the pool, ensuring all lesson and practice spaces are free from hazards.
- Enforce all aquatic facility rules, policies, and American Red Cross safety protocols.
- Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies according to facility emergency action plans.
- Prepare lesson plans and block plans for each instructional session.
- Maintain daily paperwork, skill assessments, and student progress reports.
- Build positive relationships with students, parents, and staff through effective communication.
- Assist with set‑up, clean‑up, and maintenance of equipment and facility spaces.
- Support program evaluation and continuous improvement efforts.
- Serve as a role model promoting recreation, inclusion, and wellness.
- Attend required staff training, in‑service sessions, and professional development meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Minimum age of 15.
- Must possess and maintain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or obtain WSI within 90 days of employment.
- Ability to perform required swim skills and demonstrate appropriate American Red Cross stroke techniques (per WSI prerequisites).
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with participants, parents/guardians, and staff.
- Prior experience teaching swim lessons or working in an aquatic environment preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of swimming techniques, water safety, and Red Cross Learn‑to‑Swim levels.
- Ability to maintain a safe, positive, inclusive learning environment.
- Must be able to respond quickly and perform life‑saving measures in emergency situations.
- Strong decision‑making, leadership, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to interact and be courteous to fellow employees and pool patrons of diverse backgrounds.
- Must attend required trainings.
- Regular, punctual in‑person attendance.
- Must be able to correctly complete appropriate paperwork.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, swim, and smell. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. The employee is required to enter the water.
The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high places and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high. Candidates who receive conditional job offers are subject to pre‑employment drug screening that includes, but is not limited to, marijuana (cannabinoids/THC).
