The TJC Band Program has built a reputation for excellence through outstanding student experiences, high-level performances, strong recruiting, and a consistent presence across campus, East Texas, and the state.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to build on that momentum by leading the Apache Marching Band and Basketball Band, contributing to concert ensembles and classroom instruction, and helping shape the continued growth, visibility, and culture of the TJC Bands. Assistant Director of Bands/Director of Athletic Bands Duties
- Rehearse, conduct, and direct the Apache Marching Band and Basketball Band, and assist with concert ensembles as assigned
- Teach course as assigned each fall and spring semester based on departmental needs
- Teach applied music lessons on primary instrument(s) as needed
- Design and implement marching band productions incorporating current trends in music, visual design, and general effect.
- Lead and supervise instructional staff, including faculty, technicians, and designers.
- Establish and oversee the student leadership team to support program operations and student development
- Develop and execute a comprehensive recruitment strategy targeting local, regional, and state-wide students, with emphasis on East Texas.
- Represent the college as a clinician, adjudicator, or guest conductor to support recruitment and program visibility.
- Collaborate with campus partners, including Athletics, Student Life, and the Apache Belles, for planning and execution of performances and related events.
- Coordinate logistics for rehearsals, performances, and travel related to Athletic Bands.
- Maintain accurate inventory of instruments, equipment, and uniforms associated with Athletic Bands.
- Assist with band camps, workshops, and related instructional activities.
Master’s Degree in Music
Required Experience- Demonstrated success in directing marching and athletic bands, with evidence of effective teaching and program development at the high school or collegiate level
- Proven ability to recruit and retain students, with a commitment to building relations across East Texas and surrounding regions
- Strong instructional skills in ensemble rehearsal, applied teaching, and student development within a comprehensive band program
- Effective communication, organizational, and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
- Working knowledge of NJCAA/NCAA guidelines and standards, with familiarity with best practices in marching band design and instruction
- Experience teaching at the collegiate or community college level
- Background in marching band design, including music, visual, and/or general effect
- Experience as a clinician, adjudicator, or guest conductor
- Demonstrated success collaborating with instructional staff and developing student leadership
