Job Summary

The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine Basic Sciences Core Faculty position is a full‑time, non‑tenure position. The selected candidate will teach biochemistry across the curriculum, facilitate small group case‑based learning, and collaborate with clinical and basic science faculty to develop cases, exams, and evaluate learning outcomes.

Key Responsibilities Phase 1 Medical Students
  • Develop goals, learning objectives, pre‑work assignments, pre‑ and post‑test questions, and supplemental materials for each topic in the Phase 1 sequence.
  • Develop cases for the case‑based curriculum.
  • Run large‑group sessions and facilitate case‑based learning sessions three mornings per week (M/W/F) during year 1 and three mornings/afternoons per week (M/T/Th) during year 2.
  • Participate in clinical correlations and illustrate vertical integration of the basic science materials.
  • Teach and model professionalism and ethics.
  • Provide support: social gatherings, academic issues, reflections, independent investigative inquiry questions, and student scholarship.
  • Attend White Coat Ceremony in the fall.
Phase 2 Medical Students
  • Provide support, guidance, and mentoring to each student during clerkships as needed.
  • Develop goals, learning objectives, pre‑work assignments, pre‑ and post‑test questions, and supplemental materials for each topic in the Phase 2 sequence.
  • Develop cases for the case‑based curriculum.
  • Run large‑group sessions and facilitate small group sessions as needed.
  • Support student scholarship.
  • Review reflections and experiences of students.
Phase 3 Medical Students
  • Continue mentoring relationships.
  • Review and edit students’ personal statements.
  • Write letters of support for residency applications.
  • Support student scholarship.
  • Attend post‑Match Party in March and Medical School Graduation in May; represent the School of Medicine at UT Tyler commencements and other formal events.
General
  • Prepare for, attend, and participate in faculty meetings.
  • Work on group projects such as OSCE case development, communication skills, oral case presentation, clinical reasoning, professionalism and ethics, mentoring, feedback, and evaluation.
  • Participate in and facilitate academic faculty development sessions and retreats.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Terminal doctoral degree (MD/DO or PhD) in basic science disciplines such as biochemistry, biomedical sciences, or physiology.
  • Evidence of flexibility to teach across multiple disciplines, expertise in technology and active learning instruction.
  • Three years of relevant teaching experience in health professions education; prior experience teaching in a medical school curriculum is highly desirable.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) if the position requires at least 20 hours per week and lasts at least 135 days. Employees can elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) if the position is 40 hours per week and at least 135 days.

The position is security‑sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code for criminal background checks. Applicants must prove eligibility to work in the U.S. by hire.
