Job Description – Transportation Engineer I/II/III, District Maintenance – Tyler (2601274)

TxDOT’s Tyler District is seeking Transportation Engineers at levels I, II, or III to work in the District Maintenance Office in Tyler, TX. Candidates will design routine maintenance and bridge preventive maintenance contracts and perform in‑field reviews of bridge repairs. Ranges
  • Transportation Engineer I (B24): $65,104.00 – $ annually
  • Transportation Engineer II (B25): $69,572.00 – $ annually
  • Transportation Engineer III (B26): $76,530.00 – $ annually

The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the right to determine the level offered based on work experience, skill level and business needs.

Essential Duties

Transportation Engineer I

  • Analyze and recommend approval for modifications to highway maintenance contracts.
  • Assist in evaluating pavement products and pavement condition data.
  • Assist in the development, preparation and letting of maintenance contracts.
  • Assist with design, computer operations and plan preparation.
  • Drive/travel to project sites to perform on‑site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and provide technical support.
  • Interpret maintenance standards, rules, methods, procedures, practices and policies.
  • Review and process Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submissions, special specifications or provisions.
  • Collect data, analyze forecasts and develop plans.
  • Perform engineering design work: layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
  • Assist in preparing reports on pavement condition.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Transportation Engineer II

  • All duties of Engineer I.
  • Evaluate pavement products and pavement condition data.
  • Update, review and monitor requests for changes to plans, manuals and standard sheets.
  • Provide design engineering support for district project development.
  • Review shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.
  • Write and review proposals and estimates for letting.

Transportation Engineer III

  • All duties of Engineer II.
  • Collect, evaluate and analyze data, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments and develop plans.
  • Recommend approval of modifications to highway maintenance contracts.
  • Coordinate and monitor assigned projects, programs, plans.
  • Assist in preparing reports on pavement conditions.
  • Review designs and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by others.
  • Coordinate routine and emergency maintenance contracts; oversee specifications writing, plan and proposal review, and estimating for letting.
  • Update and monitor requests for changes to plans, manuals and standard sheets.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related science. Higher degrees accepted by TX PELS.
  • Experience: Satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Graduate level education may substitute for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
  • Licenses and Certification: Valid driver’s license; position requires driving state vehicle. Professional Engineer license. Non‑licensed engineers in other US states must obtain Texas PELS within 6 months.
