Responsibilities

This position is responsible for planning and implementing natural resource stewardship activities within East Texas State Parks. Under the direction of the Regional Natural Resources Coordinator, this position plans, prepares, reviews and implements natural resources conservation activities for assigned state parklands. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing management plans; providing GIS support for the region’s parks and the Natural Resources Program.
  • Inventory, monitoring and protection of sensitive natural resources; restoration and management of natural habitats.
  • Developing, updating and implementing natural resource, fire, and other management plans for state parklands within the assigned region.
  • Participating in the preparation of burn units and the implementation of prescribed fire actions.
  • Reviewing TPWD infrastructure, operations, and proposed third-party developments affecting assigned parklands.
  • Ensuring compliance with TPWD codes, policies, and applicable environmental regulations.
  • Providing technical assistance, training and staff support to regional or park staff.
  • Performing other duties as assigned and complying with agency rules and procedures.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science, Conservation Science, Ecology, Environmental Science or a closely related field.

Experience:

  • NRS II:
    Two years field experience in Natural Resources Management, Conservation Science or closely related field.
  • NRS III:
    Four years field experience in Natural Resources Management, Conservation Science or closely related field.

Licensure:

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid state driver’s license within 30 days of employment.
  • Non-Commercial Political Pesticide Applicators license with Aquatic Application certification within one year of employment.
  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group Fire Fighter Type II certification within one year of employment.

Note:

Retention is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required licenses and certifications.

Physical Requirement:

Must be able to pass the FFTII moderate duty physical fitness standard (walk 2 miles with 25 lb. pack in 30 minutes or less) within one year of employment. Retention contingent upon meeting and maintaining physical requirements.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • Experience: A Master’s degree in Conservation Science, Wildlife Science, Ecological Science or a closely related field may substitute for one year of required experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Conservation Science, Wildlife Science, Ecological Science or closely related field.

Experience:

  • NRS II:
    Experience implementing conservation and resource management projects.
  • NRS III: NRS II experience plus experience developing and leading implementation of resource management plans.
