Job SummaryPerforms highly complex parole administration and supervision work. Work involves reviewing and approving parole supervision activities, parole investigations, parole release plans and reports; coordinating case assignments; conducting case analyses; and supervising the work of others. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Functions- Plans, schedules, and supervises parole officer activities; coordinates parole supervision activities with other units, departments, and entities; and assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures.
- Visits offender residences, jails, correctional facilities, courthouses, social services, and other agencies to obtain offender information, coordinate parole investigations, and to resolve problems.
- Conducts and supervises activities to monitor offender compliance with the conditions of supervision to include alcohol and drug testing.
- Performs criminal information searches and retrieval using Texas Department of Public Safety criminal history system access.
- Supervises the work of others; establishes and provides training to parole officers; reviews and evaluates documentation and recommendations; and counsels parole officers and offenders on difficult cases.
- Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
- Education:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; major coursework in Criminal Justice, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or related field preferred. Each year of experience beyond required three years may be substituted for thirty semester hours on a year‑for‑year basis with a maximum substitution of two years. - Experience:
Three years full‑time, wage‑earning criminal justice, case management, case processing, or military experience. - Preferred:
Parole officer experience, technical review or program evaluation experience, teaching, training, or staff development experience. - Must meet and maintain Texas Risk Assessment System (TRAS) access eligibility and a valid state driver license.
- Must obtain a certificate of course completion for TLETS policy and procedures training within six months of employment.
- Knowledge of principles of criminology and penology, and of parole case management methods and practices.
- Knowledge of psychological concepts of behavior, social adjustment, and emotional stability.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, and statutes regarding pardons and paroles.
- Skills:
clear communication, coordination with staff and agencies, technical data review and report preparation, problem solving, effective interviewing and counseling of offenders, evaluation of offender adjustment, conducting investigations, public addressing, training and supervision.
- Physical ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry under 15 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.
- Work conditions include working inside, around machines and moving parts, radiant and electrical energy, chemicals used for urinalysis, closely with others and alone, protracted or irregular hours, and traveling by car, van, bus, and airplane.
- Equipment used may include computer, calculator, copier, fax machine, urinalysis equipment, firearms, telephone, dolly, and automobile.
