Summary: Under direct supervision of the Utility Field Supervisor, and the Utility Director, the Utility Operator performs a variety of tasks in the general installation, maintenance and repair of natural gas, water and sewer system operations. May be tasked with the daily maintenance or repairs to gas, water and wastewater treatment facilities, lift stations, pump stations and provides support to the public and assigned City departments and divisions.
The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities required to be performed by personnel in this position and to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of the gas, water and wastewater utilities including main lines, service lines, valves, hydrants, and treatment and/or pumping facilities.
- Checks meters, gauges, pumps, and control panels to verify correct operation of equipment and records information.
- Operates, maintains, and repairs all pumps, control panels, chlorinators, and chemical feed pumps.
- Monitors equipment operator to prevent damage to other utility lines while digging.
- Answers emergency calls from the public and other agencies taking appropriate action such as jetting sewer services, sewer main repairs, gas leak repairs and repairs to the water system.
- Organizes tools, equipment and supplies necessary to complete assignments. Inspect, clean and maintain equipment and tools in safe operating order.
- Performs routine inspections of assigned areas to detect any necessary repairs or hazardous conditions.
- Maintains and observes safety regulations including wearing appropriate clothing, erecting proper barricades and signage, using proper equipment personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Required to work in on-call rotations weekends, holidays, and emergency response as required.
- Travels to attend meetings and training as required.
- Operate and maintain city equipment, e.g. backhoe, sewer jet machine, etc.
- Completes work orders as assigned.
- Properly locate and mark all underground facilities within the cities distribution system.
- Maintain city grounds including City Hall complex, wastewater treatment plant, lift stations, water facilities, and streets.
- Acquire and/or maintain water/wastewater license(s) within one year, and natural gas operator qualification.
