Job Description
The Field Maintenance Technician travels to drilling rig field locations to perform equipment service and maintenance activities, such as servicing, repairing, adjusting, inspecting, and testing various rig equipment. They document equipment condition and maintenance activities, train and mentor crews on operational-level maintenance, coordinate maintenance projects, and provide feedback to the job site manager and maintenance management team.
Responsibilities- Plan and travel extended distances to rig locations to perform maintenance duties.
- Provide training and support to operational crews in preventative maintenance checks and basic and intermediate repairs.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical faults and coordinate repair plans.
- Perform technical‑level inspections on equipment such as the Top Drive, Mud Pump, Iron Roughneck, Catwalk, Engines, and electrical/VFDs; document findings accurately.
- Participate in rig maintenance projects with crew or third‑party support.
- Develop and monitor spare and replacement parts listings for specific equipment.
- Complete repairs identified during inspections.
- Troubleshoot and problem‑solve assigned equipment and assets.
- Assist operations with maintenance and policy implementation.
- Apply knowledge of oilfield drilling equipment and systems.
- Ability to navigate drilling rig work sites, including walking, climbing, and standing in day/night and weather conditions.
- Ability to travel to remote rig sites and perform extended trips, including overnight stays.
- Availability for a rotational schedule that may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and on‑call after hours.
- Lift and carry 50 pounds independently on uneven surfaces.
- Use hand and power tools, including heavy‑duty handheld and long‑handled tools.
- Maintain situational awareness and safety, including judging distances and listening for abnormal noises.
- Provide clear communication in English, including reading, writing, speaking, and following instructions.
- Respond immediately to emergency situations.
- Wear required PPE such as hard hat, safety glasses, coveralls, gloves, respirator, and hearing protection.
- Perform basic math and basic computer skills in Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrate proficiency in maintenance software and work‑order processes.
- Operate oilfield equipment and pass required certification exams.
- Complete additional training courses and certifications as assigned.
- Pass pre‑employment drug and alcohol testing and background checks.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid state‑issued driver’s license and eligibility to drive Company vehicles.
- Technical or advanced education courses.
- Experience with control systems and automation technologies or instrumentation.
- Diesel technology and power generation experience.
- Field maintenance experience in the oil and gas industry.
- Familiarity with major rig equipment (e.g., Caterpillar engines, mud pumps, catwalks, hydraulic lines, top drives).
- Experience with OEM control systems such as Omron, Siemens, Allen Bradley, ABB, Woodward, Yaskawa, etc.
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience in the oil and natural gas industry.
The role requires outdoor work in all weather conditions, exposure to high wind, turbulence, loud machinery, and hazardous chemicals in a heavy industrial setting with moving overhead equipment.
