Position: HVAC MECHANIC - UNION

General Summary

Heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers—often referred to as HVACR technicians—work on heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration systems that control air quality in many types of buildings. Must be familiar with chill water and hot water systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Installation, service, troubleshooting, and repairs including but not limited to: chillers, air handling units, controls, package units, split systems, exhaust fans, refrigerators, freezers, hot/chilled water pumps. Involvement in Site’s predictive maintenance program so previous experience is highly desirable.
  • Joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions, and solders joints, using a torch, forming a complete circuit for the refrigerant.
  • Installs expansion and discharge valves in the circuit.
  • Mounts compressor and condenser units on platform or floor, using hand tools, following blueprints or engineering specifications.
  • Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power source.
  • Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units, using electrician’s hand tools and test equipment.
  • Tasks range from operation of systems to the examination and evaluation of equipment to determine needed repairs.
  • Installs refrigeration and air conditioning systems by positioning compressors, motors, condensers, humidifiers, evaporators, heaters and other components in accordance with design specifications.
  • Charges refrigeration systems with refrigerant gas and tests for leaks.
  • Starts unit and adjusts it for proper cut-in and cut-out of refrigeration units, humidifiers, heaters, air cleaners, and circulating pumps.
  • Adjusts systems for optimal performance.
  • Maintains refrigeration and air conditioning systems by checking performance and determining problems. Repairs, adjusts, or replaces defective elements.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs the electrical and pneumatic systems associated with refrigeration and air conditioning equipment from the safety switch throughout the equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, operates all types centrifugal and reciprocating refrigeration/air-conditioning systems; also, all types of pneumatic/electro-mechanical temperature controls including functionality of Building Automation System (BAS).
  • Performs necessary plumbing procedures to ensure operation of systems and equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance.
  • Maintain and create Activity Hazard Analysis.
  • Involvement in Site’s predictive maintenance program.
  • Keep records of all maintenance and repair work conducted.
  • Assist others as part of the maintenance team as required.
Knowledge, Experience and Skill Requirements
  • Shall possess one of the following certifications: EPA 608 or A/C Refrigeration Operator and;
  • Must hold one or more of the following certifications or equivalent experience:
    North American Technician Excellence (NATE) HVAC Service Technician certification, HVAC Excellence Professional Level Certification, UA Star HVAC Mastery Certification or Union Workers Journeyman Certification
  • Must be able to read and understand the signs, signals, and operating instructions in use in accordance with EM 385-1-1.
  • Ability to perform work of the craft in a rapid and efficient manner under extreme conditions.
  • Must be able to perform work safely under hazardous conditions.
  • Able to troubleshoot and repair most complex problems.
  • Expert knowledge of craft theory and craft materials with the ability to apply the theory and select the proper materials.
  • Trained in all types and sizes of air conditioning refrigeration and evaporative cooling equipment.
  • Must be able to pass a background check to obtain a HSPD
    12 security clearance.
  • Valid Driver License required with a good driving record.
