WSB is seeking an Untoneables Locating Technician to support utility locating operations in the field. This position is responsible for accurately locating, troubleshooting, documenting, and marking underground utilities, including gas and electric facilities, with a focus on facilities that are difficult or unable to be located through standard locating methods. This role requires a safety-focused, detail-oriented individual who enjoys independent outdoor fieldwork, problem-solving, and working in a fast-paced environment.

The Unlocatable Utility Locating Technician plays a critical role in protecting underground infrastructure, supporting excavation safety, and helping ensure compliance with federal, state, local, client, and company requirements.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform utility locating duties with an emphasis on safety, accuracy, and compliance
  • Respond to locate requests within required legal and client time frames.
  • Locate and mark underground utilities, including gas, using appropriate APWA color standards.
  • Read and interpret utility maps, prints, as-built records, and construction plans to identify underground utility size, type, and location.
  • Operate and use electronic locating equipment and general field tools to identify underground facilities.
  • Troubleshoot difficult or unlocatable buried facilities using approved methods, including hand tools and hydro-vac support when applicable.
  • Assist in the unlocatable process by gathering field information, documenting findings, and working with internal teams, clients, and third-party contractors to resolve locate challenges.
  • Verify and document federal, local, client, and company compliance requirements during field operations.
  • Complete daily inspection reports, locate documentation, pictures, schedules, time, expenses, and other required records electronically using a company-provided iPad or similar device.
  • Gather field data, prepare accurate records, and document measurements for future use.
  • Track quantities, materials, mapping accuracy, and as-built documentation as needed.
  • Communicate work scopes, field conditions, responsibilities, and project updates with project teams, clients, contractors, and internal staff.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and submit required daily documentation.
  • Document and report incidents, near misses, field concerns, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Complete and maintain Operator Qualification modules and other required training in a timely manner.
  • Navigate to multiple job sites daily and perform work in a variety of outdoor field conditions.
  • Support project kickoff preparation by helping gather and organize equipment as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support utility locating and field operations.
  • Perform onsite inspections for work being completed by Hydrovac contractors.
  • Monitoring excavation around Plastic/Steel pipe.
  • Overseeing the installation of tracer wire and marker balls are installed to company standards and procedures.
  • Overseeing the installation of Test points and assuring they are installed properly to company standards and procedures.

What You Will Bring:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1 - 4+ years of utility locating experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Polyethylene (PE) and Steel Gas lines and component's
  • Knowledge in Damage Prevention
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record required.
  • Ability to pass Operator Qualification modules and other required training.
  • Knowledge of local 811 processes, locate laws, and utility marking requirements preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret utility maps, prints, construction plans, and as-built documentation.
  • Ability to perform accurate, high-quality utility locates.
  • Experience with ticket management systems preferred.
