Position OverviewThe Senior Property Accountant will report to an Accounting Manager and be responsible for the day-to-day accounting operations of a portfolio of approximately 6–7 residential and mixed-use properties, primarily affordable housing communities. This individual will manage full-cycle property accounting responsibilities, prepare financial statements, and partner closely with property and regional managers.
This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who enjoys portfolio ownership, values stability, and thrives in a collaborative but independent work environment.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements for assigned properties
- Perform operating revenue and expense variance analysis
- Reconcile balance sheet and general ledger accounts
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations
- Process debt service payments and calculate owner distributions
- Manage real estate tax and insurance payments to ensure timely payments and avoid penalties
- Prepare personal property tax filings and business licenses
- Post monthly accruals and collaborate with property and regional managers for accuracy
- Prepare replacement reserve filings
- Maintain and update equity schedules
- Assist with annual budget preparation, re-forecasts, and cash flow projections
- Support audit requests and prepare required schedules
- Identify opportunities for process improvement
- Communicate regularly with operations teams and ownership groups
- BA or BS Degree in Accounting or Finance (U.S.
-based institution required) - 5+ years of property accounting experience (7+ preferred)
- Experience managing full-cycle accounting for multiple properties
- Affordable housing experience strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP
- Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, SUMIFs, etc.)
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Must be local to the DMV area
