Job Description - Summary
You will serve as an Electrician Leader (Expert) in the Department of the Navy to include work sites of Portsmouth, Puget Sound, Norfolk, and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyards and the Intermediate Maintenance Facility.

- Serve as an expert electrician leading a group to ensure work assignments are completed.
- Responsible for the repair, overhaul, installation, modification, calibration, and test of electrical systems and equipment on naval surface ships and submarines, both nuclear and non‑nuclear.
- Set up, operate, and troubleshoot various types of equipment used to manufacture and overhaul ship components.
- Disassemble, clean, and replace visually defective parts; reassemble, check for more faulty components, align, calibrate and verify equipment using known standards and test equipment.
- Oversee adjustments and repairs to maintain operation of electrical equipment, manage malfunction or defect causes, and replace worn or damaged parts.
- Ensure all group work assignments are carried out on any of the three shifts as assigned.
- Pass instructions received from supervisors and provide overview of tasks to other workers.
- Keep supervisors apprised of potential problems, controversial issues, and recommend corrective actions.
- Inspect completed and in‑process work for quality of workmanship and adherence to requirements, specifications, standards, plans, and schedules.
- Perform research to continually improve trade processes and keep shop personnel apprised of new technologies, procedures, best practices, and tooling improvements.
- Ensure plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available for specific jobs.
- Mentor, train, and instruct trade employees in a wide range of electrical equipment.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
- Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
- New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
- Within the Department of Defense, appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement is subject to 5 U.S.C. 3326.
- Born after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service.
- May be a bargaining unit position.
- May be required to complete a pre‑appointment physical examination.
- Required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
- May be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work may be performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, chemicals); may require participation in medical surveillance programs.
- May require exposure to high noise levels.
- May require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites; must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- May require working an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements; overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
- May require work onboard ships, the ability to climb vertical ladders, and work in awkward positions and confined spaces.
- May require lifting and/or carrying loads/items up to 40 pounds in weight.
- Incumbent must obtain, maintain, and use a government travel card.
- May require drug testing; successful completion of a pre‑employment drug test (including marijuana) is required.
- Mission Essential position: required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission assigned by a local or command decision.
Applicants must demonstrate, through experience and training, the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the applicable level. Qualification emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily length of time. The screen‑out element for this position is Ability to Lead or Supervise.
