Job description

We are a busy Housing service, responsible for maintaining and improving homes across the city.
Your role will involve delivering a wide range of carpentry and joinery repairs and installations in occupied homes, ensuring work is completed to a high standard and in line with health and safety requirements.

You will take ownership of jobs from diagnosis through to completion, aiming to resolve issues on the first visit wherever possible. You will communicate effectively with residents, colleagues, and planning teams, keep accurate records of work, and manage materials and vehicle stock responsibly. There may be opportunities to support and mentor apprentices.

Responsibilities
  • Perform carpentry and joinery repairs, installations, and refurbishment work in occupied council homes.
  • Diagnose issues, plan the work, and execute repairs with a strong focus on first‑visit resolution.
  • Maintain accurate records of all work performed and manage material and vehicle stock.
  • Communicate clearly with residents and colleagues, providing professional, customer‑facing service.
  • Complete risk assessments and adhere to all health and safety procedures.
  • Support and mentor apprentices where appropriate.
Qualifications and experience

To be successful you should:

  • Have strong carpentry and joinery skills, supported by a recognised qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of building maintenance and construction.
  • Show competence in diagnosing faults, problem‑solving and completing repairs to a high standard.
  • Be comfortable using tools, equipment and digital systems for recording work.
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Possess strong communication skills and the ability to adapt your approach to diverse residents.
  • Understand health and safety requirements and be able to plan work effectively to meet deadlines.
Salary and hours

Salary: £39,209 to £41,212
Contractual hours: 37
Basis:
Fixed Hours
Package: 5.5 hours contracted overtime

This role is permanent with opportunities for ongoing training, health and safety training, technical skill development and potential progression into supervisory roles. You may be involved in service improvement projects to modernise repairs and maintenance delivery.

Additional information:
The starting salary will be pro‑rata if the position is part‑time, and contracted overtime rated pay will not be included. A Basic Disclosure Criminal Records Check is required. The role is based at Housing Centre, Fairway Trading Estate, Eastergate Road, Brighton, BN2 4QL
