Mendocino-Lake Community College District is currently accepting applications for a Short-Term, Non-Continuing CakWORKS Specialist to work in our Counseling/CalWORKs Department. This is a temporary, non-continuing position. The position is open until filled.

Under direction of the assigned supervisor, the specialist will assist in the coordination of the California Work Opportunity Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) programs; serve and assist all CalWORKs/TANF referrals, potential students and current students with the application process; determine eligibility and awards; track student progress; prepare related reports; assist with other special student services activities as assigned.

Salary and BenefitsThis is a Short-Term Non-Continuing (STNC) position, 20 hours per week, $26.38 per hour. Ed Code 88003 authorizes a governing board to hire STNC employees for less than 75% of a school year, up to 180 days. Benefits:

- Serves as a lead worker for CalWORKs/TANF; acts as liaison with Department of Social Services (DSS) and related county offices in Lake and Mendocino Counties, including regular reporting, adjustments, meetings, etc.
- Refers students, staff, and the public to appropriate community and District resources and maintains communication with appropriate agencies regarding the needs of the CalWORKs student population.
- Creates, maintains and organizes records and files, including state‑mandated case files for each CalWORKs/TANF student; collaborates with DSS to prevent duplication of services and ensures the college is aware of sanctioned students as soon as the sanction occurs; prepares and maintains a variety of correspondence, reports, documents, and forms.
- Utilizes and maintains computer databases to track students; provides statistical information; monitors student participation and progress to ensure program compliance.
- Assists students in completing the CalWORKs/TANF application process; processes incoming documentation to determine completeness and acceptability; determines eligibility and awards; assists in resolving eligibility issues; screens applications to determine TANF program eligibility.
- Coordinates CalWORKs student orientations and follow‑up appointments; provides guidance to students to accomplish their academic and career goals.
- Assists with CalWORKs/TANF application workshops and orientation sessions for students; publicizes the program by disseminating information through presentations.
- Assists with program planning, operations, and reporting by providing information, suggestions, and statistics; interprets and implements rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; assures compliance by integrating statutory changes into delivery; provides related training for students and colleagues.
- Analyzes situations, resolves operational questions and issues; communicates with faculty, staff, students, and other individuals and organizations to provide program information and assistance; assists students with Financial Aid applications and other student programs; assists in outreach activities such as Cal Fresh; may refer students to other related programs.
- Supports and assists the District’s promotion and delivery of state support programs, such as Cal Fresh.
- Oversees the CalWORKs work‑study budgets and assignments.
- Coordinates services and verifies eligibility for CalWORKs students at the Child Development Lab.
- Prepares for audits and program reviews as needed; assists in resolving related issues.
- Answers telephones and assists at the counter with questions, scheduling appointments, completing forms; operates a variety of office equipment including computers, related software, calculators, copiers, and others; may provide work direction to student employees.
- Attends meetings and conferences; supports and assists in the delivery of other student support services; performs other duties as assigned.
