Position Overview
Mendocino-Lake Community College District is hiring a Professional Expert, Short‑Term, Non‑Continuing Fire Science Lab Instructional Support. The position is temporary, hourly, and will run from January 17, 2023 through May 19, 2023. Hours and days will vary based on available lab schedules.
Salary and BenefitsThe hourly rate is $35.00. The role is exempt from academic day restrictions per Ed Code 88003.
Essential Functions- Demonstrate firefighter apparatus and equipment such as rescue tools, portable pumps, and Self‑Contained Breathing Apparatus gear to illustrate fire ground application.
- Provide fire science demonstrations and instructional support to students.
- Assist with fire science material coordination and/or dispersion.
- Assist with fire science reporting and documentation.
- Assist with setup of classroom materials and exhibits.
- Minimum 1 year experience as a paid firefighter or 2 years as a volunteer firefighter.
- Must meet Human Resources guidelines, including a Live Scan background check and TB test.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Licenses and Certifications- Completion of State Fire Training (SFT) Instructor 1A and 1B or
- Instructor I through the State Fire Marshal’s Office or
- State Fire Marshal Instructor Certificate.
- Specific curriculum and equipment/tools appropriate to the lab setting.
- Basic teaching and learning principles, study skills, customer service skills.
- Appropriate language skills including usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary.
- Basic arithmetic.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Follow verbal and written directions.
- Follow through on assigned tasks.
- Conduct oneself in a professional manner.
- Abide by District policies and procedures.
- Lifting up to 125 pounds; walk/stand intermittently.
- Develop and maintain constructive relationships with students of diverse learning needs.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Help students identify problems and recommend solutions.
