Position: Road Maintenance Worker I - Roads

Road Maintenance Worker I

Position located in Willits and Ukiah yards. Performs skilled and semi‑skilled labor, maintenance, repair, and construction work on County roads, bridges, and landfills. Assigned to Road or Bridge Maintenance as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Operate light to heavy equipment and related vehicles.
  • Perform maintenance and safety checks on equipment.
  • Maintain logs and records of equipment use and maintenance.
  • Perform landfills maintenance; maintain safety of worksites.
  • Respond to emergency calls off hours as required.
  • Assist with excavations, road repairs, culvert work, paving, snow removal, sign maintenance, seeding, traffic monitoring.
  • For bridge assignment: basic carpentry, hand and power tools, steel bridge maintenance, concrete work, formwork, surface finish, cleaning, debris removal, sandblasting.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED plus 6 months of related experience (construction, landscaping, road work).
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation, safety, record keeping, basic arithmetic.
  • Ability to use tact, discretion, initiative.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs routinely; occasionally more than 100 lbs.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish encouraged.
Work Settings

Work primarily outdoors on County‑maintained roads, bridges, and landfills. Shift may include evenings, nights, weekends and emergencies.

Salary & Benefits

Compensation based on a five‑step salary range with annual merit increases. Benefits include 11 paid holidays per year, 24–48 hours of personal leave annually (depending on bargaining unit), vacation accruals, paid sick leave, health, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, retirement (Social Security, 1937 Act), employee assistance, wellness programs, and labor contract coverage.
