Job Overview

Salary: $47,340.80 - $57,532.80 Annually USD

Locations: Ukiah, Willits, Coastal Region (including Covelo)

This Social Worker Assistant series provides an excellent career path for those interested in pursuing a career with the County of Mendocino. The series supports full‑time and part‑time positions in Adult & Aging Services and Family Services across the county.

Responsibilities
  • Assist social workers with routine tasks such as ongoing assessments of clients in the In-Home Support Services (IHSS) program, instructing parents on parenting and household skills, supervising parental visits, transporting clients, and performing related support functions.
  • Adult Services – maintain caseload of infirmed or incapacitated elderly adults, conduct home visits or alternative modalities, perform needs assessments, verify needs with medical providers, present assessments to review committees, complete narrative reports, make referrals, maintain provider registry, conduct provider orientation, produce provider list, coordinate provider files and documents.
  • Family Services – provide direct training and counseling to parents and young adults, monitor medical and psychological care of abused children, supervise visits with parents and children, conduct drug screenings, provide emergency childcare, testify in juvenile court hearings, meet families to gather information, conduct ongoing needs assessments, coordinate with family members, and assist with specialized programs.
  • All Areas – identify and report specific indications of need for social services, maintain records, transport clients as needed, perform administrative tasks, track client progress, assist social workers, serve as liaison between clients and the community, assist families in learning and using resources available, and perform other related duties.
Minimum Qualifications
  • One year in a public social services agency as a Social Worker Assistant I, or two years performing duties of a Vocational Assistant, Eligibility Worker, or similar class providing direct service to clients on a regular basis.
  • OR two years of college with at least 15 semester units in social welfare, social/human services, sociology, child development, or other behavioral science areas.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of basic human behavior and community resources, acceptable housekeeping methods, social services regulations, laws impacting area of assignment, care of the physically/mentally ill or disabled, basic instructional methods, and computers.
  • Skills in identifying problems, developing options, reporting need for services, understanding cultural differences, and interacting with clients and staff.
  • Mental and physical abilities: ability to walk, sit, use hands, speak, see, reach, lift up to 40 lbs, maintain effective relationships, deal with complex cases, and handle stressful or emergency situations.
