Power Plant Operator

Responsibilities

• Serve as a fully qualified hydro station operator at a hydroelectric power project with adjunct facilities including navigation lock, fishways, pumping plant, and spillway.
• Make regular inspections of project areas and equipment.
• Operate power project equipment following prescribed standards (starting, stopping, synchronizing, adjusting load and voltage).
• Operate navigation lock control machinery to guide vessels through high single‑lift locks.
• Operate gates to control flow, pool levels, or discharge debris.
• Perform light cleaning, lubrication, and operator‑related preventive maintenance.
• Maintain security surveillance of the project.

• Background investigation required; suitability or fitness determination may be applied.
• Pre‑employment physical exam and drug test required.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a State driver’s license.
• Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds and occasionally more.
• Position requires rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.

• Demonstrated ability to perform primary Power Plant Operator duties without more than normal supervision.
• Experience operating doors, valves, switches, and controls with eye‑hand coordination; ability to handle loud environments and use protective gear.

• Required extensive walking, standing, climbing ladders and stairs; use of large valves, servolocks, deck hatches.
• Work may involve exposure to high voltages, weather extremes and noise levels; safety equipment required.

• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre‑Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
• Proof of U.S. citizenship required.
• One‑year trial/probationary period may be required.
• Direct deposit of pay required.
• Selection subject to restrictions related to Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
