Position: Data Center Cabling Decommission Tech

Job Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a fast‑paced technology company and a leader in the world of Cloud Computing. We are expanding our decommissioning team and are looking for a proven cable technician with a solid technical understanding of network and infrastructure. The Network & Cable Decommissioning (NCD) team will hire a highly motivated, self‑driven decommissioning technician who works closely with project managers, network engineers and operations teams to recover cabling infrastructure and sanitize legacy abandoned cable.

The NCD Tech will execute assigned efforts and provide status updates on those tasks.

Responsibilities
  • Physical decommissioning of network and cabling infrastructure in a Data Center environment.
  • Manage assigned work and priorities through ticketing system and/or workflows.
  • Provide status updates to stakeholders via ticketing system.
  • Effectively coordinate and deliver multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Exhibit quality workmanship on all work and maintain Data Center cleanliness.
  • Effectively leverage logical tools and systems provided.
  • Follow all production, safety and quality standards, codes and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to remove obstacles.
  • Read and comprehend datacenter build documentation and site‑specific layout material.
  • Travel within geographic work area is required; up to 25% travel outside traditional work area may be required depending on your primary region.
  • Scope effort assigned, validate all work is ready for decommissioning, create change requests to perform work, and timely execute effort that has been assigned.
  • All efforts need to be documented via ticketing system.
A Day in the Life

Decommissioning of cabling infrastructure in a Data Center environment; delivering sustainable and repeatable solutions and processes with an eye on improvement; managing work and priorities through ticketing system; providing structured feedback on project progress to stakeholders; coordinating multiple concurrent projects; exhibiting quality workmanship and maintaining Data Center cleanliness; following production, safety and quality standards; collaborating with stakeholders to remove project obstacles;

reading and comprehending blueprints and building documentation; traveling within geographic work area, up to 20% travel outside traditional work area, possibly including international travel.

The Team

The Network and Cable Decommissioning team’s primary focus is to reclaim capacity for our customers by safely removing decommissioned legacy network equipment and old cabling infrastructure, thus enabling a life‑cycle approach for the physical layer of our data center network, which helps utilize our existing DC space to its fullest potential.

Basic Qualifications
  • 1+ years of computer networking experience
  • 1+ years of Linux operating systems experience
  • Experience in computer networking
  • Experience working with Linux operating systems
  • Can lift and rack equipment up to 40 pounds
  • Experience with computer hardware troubleshooting and repair
Preferred Qualifications
  • Can work in cramped spaces or in elevated locations while adhering to health & safety guidelines
  • Experience dealing effectively with customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure
  • Experience managing work and priorities through a ticketing system
  • Experience with cabling infrastructure best practices and methodologies
  • Experience working in a data center environment (racking and stacking gear, cable management, hot/cold aisle containment)

Compensation & Benefits

The base salary range for this position is 30.00 – 54.00 USD hourly. Your Amazon package will include sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location. Amazon also offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, Basic Life & AD&D insurance and optional supplemental life plans, EAP, Mental Health Support, Medical Advice Line, Flexible Spending Accounts, Adoption and Surrogacy Reimbursement coverage), 401(k) matching, paid time off, and parental leave.
