The Grain Elevator Technician I role is an entry-level position. Under close supervision, the tasks include grain receiving, storage handling, drying, blending, and loading of grain; monitoring stored grain condition; and maintaining and cleaning grain facilities and equipment to ensure a safe working environment. The position also involves driving trucks and other motorized equipment, ongoing safe work behavior and maintaining a positive and collaborative culture.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Performs job tasks in a safe manner and follows compliance with UGC safety programs and procedures.
- Takes responsibility for own safe work behavior.
- Maintains work areas and facilities properly.
- Provides courteous and responsive customer service.
- Performs or assists in routine maintenance and basic level repairs.
- Assists in unloading or loading grain commodities by truck, rail or barge.
- Weighs or measures materials and products, using scales or other measuring instruments.
- Grain quality and evaluation.
- Maintains equipment, machinery, and work stations, using hand tools, shovels, brooms, chemicals, hoses, and lubricants.
- Observes machinery and conveyor operations, monitors lights, dials, and gauges to maintain operating levels and detect malfunctions.
- Informs supervisors of equipment malfunctions that need addressing.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED degree and/or equivalent training; exceptions for minors 16 years and older in high school for seasonal/temporary positions.
- Valid driver’s license may be required depending on location; required for company vehicles.
- Maintenance experience with mechanical aptitude preferred.
- Agricultural experience preferred but not required.
- Experience with computer programs such as Word and Excel preferred but not required.
- Proven interpersonal skills; must support a team-oriented and inclusive approach with a high level of integrity and reliability.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing with employees and customers.
- Ability to understand and follow all safety guidelines.
- Must be able to work extended hours as needed.
- Includes indoor and outdoor work in all weather and temperature environments; involves working in and around grain dust.
- Requires work in tight and confined spaces, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling; lifting, gripping, pushing, pulling tools and equipment; occasionally riding a belt lift; occasionally working at significant heights; lifting up to 50 pounds or more; ascending/descending ladders.
- Personal protective equipment required: hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, safety shoes, respiratory protection, ear protection.
- Requires reading and comprehending written and oral operational and safety instructions; communicating clearly with coworkers and supervisors.
- Must have vision that permits close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Must detect odors and understand safety warning systems.
- Requires standing, walking, using hands to handle, touch, and reach; must talk or hear regularly.
