The role:

Join our Commerce and Compliance Division as a motor carrier enforcement officer where you will join a team of dedicated professionals that keep Oregon's highways safe, efficient and protected. You will play a vital role in safeguarding our roads and infrastructure by enforcing size, weight, registration and safety laws for commercial vehicles. You'll inspect vehicles, drivers, records and cargo securement to ensure full compliance with state and federal regulations.

Through a combination of enforcement, education and regulatory action, you will help maintain the integrity of Oregon's transportation system and support safe motor carrier operations across the state.

A day in the life:

  • Monitor and maintain safe and efficient scale operations.
  • Evaluate commercial motor vehicles as they enter weigh stations or portable scales for compliance and registration.
  • Handle compliance situations with drivers and motor carrier officials who may be confused, are reluctant to provide accurate information or have language differences.
  • Issue citations and calculate fees accurately.
  • Prepare written reports and provide expert testimony when representing ODOT in court case concerning disputed citations.
  • Prepare written reports for other ODOT offices as needed.
  • Provide technical training on laws, rules and regulations pertaining to safety, size, weight, tax and registration.
  • Monitor weigh station bypass routes by driving to remote locations in state vehicles to identify vehicles bypassing without authorizations.
  • Be willing to work a monthly rotating 8 hour or 10 hour shift to ensure coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Travel throughout the state is required with some overnight stays including up to two weeks of training.
  • Work is conducted in all types of weather conditions and requires the ability to bend, stoop, climb and crawl. Must be able to lift and move 35-pound portable scales.
  • A computer assessment and typing test will be administered at time of interview for selected candidates.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Two years of public contact/customer service experience which involved dealing with the public in person or by phone, providing information about services/programs, or explaining and/or applying laws, rules, regulations/procedures; AND Experience or training using computers to retrieve and input data. Completion of an Associate's degree will substitute for one year of the public contact experience. Special qualifications:
    Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.
