Role Description

The Structural Steel Estimator is a full-time, on-site role based in Union City, CA. This position is responsible for reviewing architectural and structural drawings, specifications, and bid documents to prepare accurate material takeoffs and cost estimates for structural steel projects. Day-to-day tasks include analyzing project requirements, obtaining and evaluating supplier and subcontractor quotes, and preparing detailed bid proposals and cost breakdowns.

The estimator collaborates with project managers, engineers, and fabrication teams to clarify scope, address design questions, and ensure estimates reflect production and installation realities. The role also involves tracking project budgets, updating estimates as designs evolve, maintaining estimating templates and databases, and supporting negotiations with clients and vendors. Attention to detail, clear documentation, and consistent communication with internal stakeholders and external partners are essential.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings, steel detailing, and construction specifications.
  • Experience preparing quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and bid proposals for structural steel or related construction trades.
  • Proficiency with estimating software, spreadsheets, and basic CAD or modeling tools; strong general computer skills.
  • Solid understanding of structural steel materials, fabrication processes, erection methods, and industry standards.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate with engineers, project managers, and clients.
  • Organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple bids, deadlines, and changing priorities.
  • Preferred: experience in a steel fabrication or construction environment and familiarity with local building codes and safety practices.
  • Preferred: associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
