Sr. Mechanical Engineer – Capital Equipment / Electromechanical
Protingent Staffing has an exciting direct hire opportunity for a Sr. Mechanical Engineer for our client in Union City, CA.
Position DescriptionThe Mechanical Engineer designs operating room equipment including patient support structures, electromechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic actuators, and accessories. Contributes to product innovation through out-of-the-box thinking and drives product concepts to production across multiple full‑cycle NPI projects. Maintains current knowledge of competitive technologies across medical capital equipment, robotics, manufacturing, and materials developments related to company products. Maintains complete, accurate, and timely design history documentation, including testing methods.
Job Responsibilities- Work independently or within cross-functional development teams to lead 3D CAD modeling, structural design, and mechanism layout for complex electromechanical capital equipment
- Participate in New Product Introduction (NPI) across multiple product cycles to ensure product designs are optimized for manufacturing (DFM/DFA)
- Design robust mechanical drive systems, structural frameworks, and motion components (linkages, robotic arms, bearings, gearboxes, and actuators)
- Evaluate field input from Service and Marketing regarding product performance
- Maintain ongoing collaboration with Manufacturing and Marketing to meet and improve product needs
- Contribute to product improvement and cost reduction initiatives
- Participate in vendor selection, sustaining engineering, QC inspection, and material review board activities
- Assist other engineers and designers with technical input; lead projects as needed
- Maintain clear verbal and written communication
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) and 5-8 YOE, Master’s Degree and 3+ YOE, or PhD 1+ YOE
- 5–8 years of product design experience with a focus on large capital equipment, electromechanical machinery, surgical systems, or robotics/automation (semiconductor experience acceptable if focused on robotic/motion handling)
- Demonstrated track record of bringing multiple complex electromechanical hardware products through full‑cycle NPI into production
- Advanced proficiency with 3D CAD software, preferably Solid Works, with a primary daily focus on solid modeling and assembly packaging
- Hands‑on experience designing with metals, plastics, and composites using strict DFM/DFA principles
- Strong ability to apply engineering principles to solve problems, analyze data, and perform structural analysis (hand calculations and FEA)
- Expertise in electromechanical and mechanism design (motor selection, couplings, bearings, gearbox design, drivetrain integration, sensor integration, cams, linkages, actuators)
- Experience designing mechanical user interfaces (adjustment devices, touchpoints, jigs, and fixtures)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
