Overview
The current vacancy is for an Equipment Service Worker in the Public Works Department, Fleet Maintenance division at the Corp. Yard. Under supervision, the Equipment Service Worker performs routine servicing, minor mechanical repairs and simple diagnosis on a variety of gasoline and diesel powered equipment, vehicles and machines, and plant equipment and buildings. This may include automobiles, trucks, tractors, street sweepers, forklifts, loaders, construction equipment, balers and conveyor lines, and maintenance equipment and tools, depending on assignment.

The eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill other Equipment Service Worker vacancies during the life of the list. The list is valid for up to one year from the date established unless the Human Resources Director extends or abolishes it.

- Weeks of 04/06 and/or 04/13/26: Interviews tentatively scheduled; examination may include an interview, and possibly a written and/or performance exam.
- Perform routine servicing, minor mechanical repairs and simple diagnosis on gasoline and diesel powered equipment, vehicles, machines, plant equipment, and buildings.
- Operate and assist with maintenance tasks on equipment such as automobiles, trucks, tractors, street sweepers, forklifts, loaders, construction equipment, balers and conveyors, and related maintenance tools.
- Assist with basic welding and fabrication projects and general housekeeping duties in the garage or yard.
- Assist with stocking and ordering parts and maintain service records; transport parts and equipment as needed.
- Report more complex repairs to supervisors for appropriate attention.
- May perform duties related to confined space entry and rescue as required.
Position requires standing, walking on varied surfaces, reaching, bending, kneeling, lifting up to 60 pounds, and exposure to outdoor weather, fumes, dust, and chemicals. Work may involve climbing ladders, operating power tools and heavy equipment, driving vehicles, and, at times, traveling to off-site locations for training or service. Some accommodations may be available for qualified individuals.
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent, and
- One (1) year of experience performing routine servicing and maintenance of automobiles and/or construction equipment.
Knowledge:
- Basic methods of servicing automobiles, trucks, or construction equipment.
- Tools and equipment used for servicing and repair of vehicles or construction equipment.
- Lubricants, fuels, and their proper use.
- Safe work practices.
Abilities:
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions; read vehicle service manuals.
- Attend classes and trainings to maintain journey level skills.
- Maintain basic vehicle and equipment service records.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships.
- Drive a variety of vehicles and operate forklifts, loaders, balers, and related equipment.
Licenses and Certificates:
- Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver’s license.
- Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class A or B driver’s license by the end of the probationary period.
Tools:
- Possession of a basic set of standard and metric mechanic's tools, up to 3/4 inch or 19 mm.
Other Requirements:
- Willingness to work alternate shifts as assigned.
Desirable
Qualifications:
- Completion of a certified training program in automotive mechanics or related field from a vocational school, trade school, or college.
