Since 1972, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety / Office of the State Fire Marshal has been the State of Missouri’s premier regulatory oversight and enforcement agency for Fire Investigations, Fire Inspections, Elevator and Amusement Ride Safety, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety, and Firefighter Training and Certification. The Division provides services to over 25,000 firefighters in Missouri, as well as to the state's 6.1 million residents and over 40 million visitors each year.

Division of Fire Safety Investigators are Missouri POST-licensed law enforcement officers stationed throughout the state to assist local fire and law enforcement agencies with fire and explosion investigations.

This is advanced technical work in the investigation of fire losses. An employee in this class works with federal, state and local officials. Applicant must live in or be willing to move to the following counties within 90 days of starting employment:
Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison, Perry, St. Charles, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, or Warren Counties. If outside of the listed counties, the application will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may be approved by the Division Director.

Some Investigator duties relate to criminal activity; therefore, employees may be exposed to written material, photographs, and/or verbal language of a graphic and/or sexual nature. The work requirements of this position are not intended to create a hostile work environment; however, the work is extremely sensitive.

As an Investigator, you will determine the origin and cause of fires, explosions, and related crimes. May make criminal arrests in the course of a fire investigation. Evaluate and present evidence during prosecution. Testimony may be required in criminal and civil court cases.

Applicants for this position must meet the following statutory (320.210) and certification requirements.

• Graduate of an accredited four-year high school, or in lieu thereof, shall have obtained a certificate of equivalency from the State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
• Peace Officer Standard Training (P.O.S.T) licensed.
• Certified as a Fire Investigator by the Missouri Division of Fire Safety, or successful completion of the Fire Investigator certification course within six (6) months from date of employment.
• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in some phase of fire prevention, fire investigation, or criminal investigation. May include service in a public or private agency.
