JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director, the Manager, Laboratory (Pathology) will have responsibilities for the Regional Pathology Laboratory. The incumbent will coordinate the key functions of assigned technical areas to contribute to the efficient and safe delivery of patient centered laboratory services. As a key member of the Laboratory Leadership team, the Laboratory Manager (Pathology) will actively contribute to a respectful, supportive and positive working environment for all staff.

This position will interact with department staff, Pathologists and other WRH and Partner hospital stakeholders who submit specimens to the Surgical Pathology Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates and manages staff, schedules and resources to support high quality patient care.

  • Ensures that operational protocols are fulfilled and customer needs met in the laboratory areas as assigned (which may include more than one technical discipline, support areas).

  • Directly engages with Pathologists to determine any gaps needing to be addressed.

  • Collaborates with team members and stakeholders across the region to anticipate resource service delivery requirements and modifies processes and procedures accordingly.

  • Consciously works to build cooperative, trusting and respectful relationships and will base decisions on what is best for patient care.

  • Provide oversight of morgue and deceased processes.

  • The Manager will have significant capabilities in a specific discipline of laboratory medicine and will act as a technical resource in their area of expertise to further the Laboratory’s mission and vision.

  • Supports and participates in the Laboratory’s Quality Management Program, especially those specific to Surgical Pathology.

  • Audits departmental compliance to policies and procedures of the quality management system and implements corrective actions.

  • Manages departmental resources within approved budget and completes budget variance investigations.

  • Effective use, control and management of inventory to support seamless Laboratory operations.

  • Key member of teams and committees as a discipline specific resource.

  • Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, coordinating and prioritizing multiple assignments.

  • Demonstrated computer literacy: intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook;
    Microsoft Publisher an asset.

  • Willing to work flexible hours as needed.

  • French Language proficiency an asset.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist Program is preferred.

  • Current CMLTO certification required, with membership in good standing.

  • Completion of a recognized Pathology Assistant (PA) Program is acceptable.

  • C.C.C.P.A. or equivalent required for PA.

  • Advanced degree (ART/Master’s) is an asset, as is membership in CSMLS/MLPAO.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience, working in Laboratory Medicine.
  • Minimum of 5 years of recent Surgical Pathology experience

  • Maintaining and promoting a safe and clean working environment for all employees, students, visitors, patients/clients, family members and physicians and fulfilling the duties of workers under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
