The purpose of this classification is to operate a water treatment plant, monitoring water daily in order to ensure safe, clean water for public use. Operates electrical and mechanical process equipment and performs electrical and mechanical repair and maintenance duties. Reports to the Water Plant Supervisor.
Essential FunctionsThe following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Operates plant electrical and mechanical process equipment: monitors water daily, ensuring safe, clean water for public use; performs electrical and mechanical repair and maintenance on buildings and appurtenances, as well as to the plant grounds; maintains clear well, tank levels and backwash filters; and cleans recovery and settling basins.
Conducts laboratory tests and calculations as authorized under applicable certificate to test water parameters: logs results of tests as required; calibrates all turbid meter; and fills chemical tanks.
Operates, utilizes and maintains an assortment of equipment, machinery and tools including service pumps, chemical pumps, compressors, hand tools, etc.
Dispatches after hours and weekends.
Assists with training and mentoring new-hires regarding plant policies, procedures, operations, and equipment.
Additional FunctionsPerforms general plant cleaning, painting, and grounds maintenance.
Performs other related duties as required.
RequirementsMinimum Qualifications
High school Diploma or GED required, with vocational or technical training in water treatment or a related field; supplemented by three years of experience in water plant operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification RequiredMust possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver’s license. Must possess and maintain a Class C Water Treatment certification.
