Fleet Mechanic

The purpose of this classification is to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain a variety of makes and models of passenger automobiles, trucks, computerized engine controls, heavy road building equipment, and air compressors. Provides lead supervision to Fleet Mechanic I. Reports to the Fleet Maintenance Director.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned crew or co-workers: confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise; and assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment.

Diagnoses and troubleshoots computerized engine controls, hydraulic malfunctions, engine noises, transmission noises, suspensions noises, gas systems, etc.

Diagnoses and repairs a variety of equipment and machinery, including automobile and truck electrical and hydraulic systems, line trucks, bucket trucks, ladder trucks, backhoe, excavators, dump trucks, trenchers, generators, air compressors, lawn mowers, chain saws, street sweepers, fire trucks, weed eaters, brake systems, etc.

Rebuilds engines, transmissions, front and rear suspension, differentials, front and rear axles, brake components, carburetor, small and diesel engines, etc.

Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts: removes and replaces hydraulic cylinders and valve bodies; times cam shaft and ignition; and inspects and replaces connecting rods and main bearings.

Performs welding and fabricating duties as required.

Repairs and replaces tires, hydraulic hoses, drive line components, etc.: replaces clutch components as required.

Installs and repairs camera systems and global positioning system (GPS) units.

Prepares and maintains purchase order numbers: orders parts for the department as required.

Performs other related duties as required.

High school Diploma or GED required, with vocational or technical training in automotive repair or a related field; supplemented by five years of experience in automotive repair; experience in repairing and maintaining heavy equipment is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).

Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.

Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization:
Requires the ability to overhaul, restore, renovate, construct, and/or rebuild equipment, machinery, or objects, requiring adherence to prescribed standards and specifications. Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of the same equipment, machinery, and/or objects.

Verbal Aptitude:
Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning:
Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning:
Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

Physical Ability:
