Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg Float Pool RN with telemetry experience to float across multiple units, requiring BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certification.

Details
  • Acute care hospital float pool position floating between Med/Surg, Step-down (IMCU), Rehab (IRU), and ED holding units
  • Float team covers Med/Surg units (1E/S, 1W, 2E/S, 4E), Step-down (3W), and inpatient overflow
  • Med/Surg units care for post-surgical, ortho, pneumonia, dialysis, palliative, hospice, and low-volume inpatient chemo patients, including COVID-positive patients on designated hallways
  • Step-down unit cares for heavy cardiac patients including dysrhythmias, CVAs, and ICU step-downs
  • Patient ratios are approximately 1:6-7 on Med/Surg units and 1:4-5 on Step-down (1:6 if acuity allows)
  • Step-down unit has tele monitors and a central monitor station for the entire hospital, requiring RNs to read and interpret cardiac strips
  • Must be able to titrate cardiac drips including Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Heparin on Step-down
  • Med/Surg units may require Heparin and comfort measure drips such as MSO4, but no cardiac drips
  • Manages ventilated patients on Bipap, Cpap, and High Flow, with respiratory therapy support
  • Day shift schedule with 12-hour shifts (7a-7:30p)
  • EOW (every other weekend) requirement, with additional Friday shift requirements depending on unit
  • Holiday coverage required per facility holiday rotation
  • Uses Epic EMR
Requirements
  • Active RN license (PA or Compact) required
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Current ACLS and NIHSS certification required for Step-down/Tele assignments
  • BSN not required
  • Experience in acute care Med/Surg and/or Telemetry/Step-down settings preferred
  • Comfort working with both 'clean' and COVID-positive patient assignments simultaneously may be required
Additional Information
  • Provide direct patient care while floating across Med/Surg, Step-down, Rehab, and ED holding areas as needed
  • Receive unit-specific orientation consisting of 1 shift with a preceptor for Med/Surg and 2 shifts with a preceptor for Step-down
  • In-house hospitalist coverage 24/7 and intensivist coverage 7 days/week with on-call support after hours
  • 24/7 in-house respiratory therapy and pharmacy support available
  • No dedicated IV team, but ICU charge nurses or ICU Director available to assist with difficult IV access
  • Navy blue scrubs required, with any jackets also required to be navy blue
  • Self-scheduling and block scheduling allowed as long as unit staffing needs are met
  • Floating to ICU as a helping hand may be required for Step-down assignments
  • Radius rule of 50 miles applies for most WVU facilities; local candidates are not eligible for travel positions
  • Travelers who previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying
  • Cumulative work time within the WVU system is capped at one year before a mandatory 2-year break is required
  • First-time travelers may be considered for this position
