Job Description & How to Apply Below
The Department of Theology & Religious Studies at John Carroll University invites applications for a full-time (continuing, non-tenure track) Faculty of Practice in Catholic theology or Catholic moral theology beginning Fall 2026. The area of specialization is open, but preference will be given to candidates whose work explores the intersection of theology, social ethics, and culture; and is sensitive to the global, ecumenical, and contextually diverse nature of theology today.
Teaching load is 4-4.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching, commitment to high-impact pedagogies, and the ability to offer a wide range of courses in contemporary Catholic theology and/or Catholic moral theology that support JCU's core curriculum, the Theology & Religious Studies major/minor, and master's programs in theological education and pastoral ministry. Since this position provides courses within the interdisciplinary Catholic Studies minor, experience engaging the Catholic Intellectual Tradition more broadly is required.
Review of applications will begin on February 16, 2026, and continue until the position is filled.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include both teaching and service. The teaching requirement is four sections in each of the fall and spring semesters, in some combination of introductory- and upper-level undergraduate core, major/minor, and master's-level courses in Catholic theology and/or Catholic moral theology. Service may include: advising students; participating on departmental, college, and university committees; assisting with recruiting, development, and marketing activities; serving as an advisor to student organizations;
participating in university ministry; serving rendered to the individual's profession; and participation in other activities appropriately related to the mission of the university.
An active research agenda is welcome, but is not required for the position.
Faculty of Practice are full-time, continuing members of the Faculty who are not eligible for tenure.
The University will provide opportunities to apply for professional development support when such support relates to the responsibilities of the Faculty of Practice member.
