Designer II – University Park, IL

Federal Signal has an immediate opening for a Designer II based our University Park, Illinois facility. This position will be responsible for performing complex design tasks under the general guidance and supervision of a senior designer or engineer.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work with the electrical engineering team and create new pcb layouts as needed.
  • Work with individuals throughout the organization to maintain current product pcb designs.
  • Design components or portions of a system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.
  • Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, and cost.
  • Coordinates with other departments affected by design development.
  • Often acts as a facilitator and team lead.
Position Requirements
  • Associates degree in engineering or related technical discipline.
  • 5 - 8 years of detail and design experience using the appropriate 3D CAD modeling software.
  • Knowledge of OrCAD Schematic Capture software.
  • Knowledge of Cadence PCB Editor 17.2, 17.4 and 22.1 software.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD or Solidworks software.
  • A working knowledge of PCB design including standard industry practices is required. This should also include knowledge of printed circuit board fabrication.
  • Basic knowledge of electronic circuits and electrical components is preferred along with SMT production assembly line procedures.
  • Understanding of solder paste stencils and how they relate to production quality and efficiency is necessary.
  • Some mechanical aptitude is required to create panel array layouts when needed and board fabrication drawings.
  • Develops and reviews designs by extracting and analyzing engineering data.
  • May select and recommend procedures in the design and prepares preliminary design for engineering approval.
  • Work closely with the Mechanical Engineering Team to establish appropriate pcb outlines and keep-outs.
  • Develop and maintain new components in the pcb library, this includes schematic symbols, solder mask, pads, etc.
  • Applies engineering methods in the research and development of new products.
Electrical Engineer I – University Park, IL

Federal Signal has an immediate opening for an Electrical Engineer I based at our University Park, Illinois facility. This position is responsible for assisting in making decisions regarding engineering problems for products in our Police & Fire Division.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develops layouts concepts, parameters and designs for new and existing product re‑designs.
  • Performs analysis as required to insure meeting product performance and reliability requirements.
  • Conducts feasibility studies and prepares preliminary cost estimates of designs and redesigns.
  • Assists in generating detail specifications of individual components of a new design and replacement components in end‑of‑life and cost‑reduction projects.
  • Communicates with vendors where engineering is required to develop specifications for components and processes.
  • May write rough draft of changes to customer instruction sheet.
  • Builds prototype PC Boards as required for product development evaluation.
  • Works with Quality Control in approving vendor's parts.
  • Writes Engineering Change Requests and product structures.
  • May assist Purchasing, Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Assurance in vendor selection.
  • Assist functional engineering groups when required for Electrical/software support and development for New Product Development (NPD) efforts.
  • Utilize basic automotive electrical assembly knowledge methods.
  • Knowledge of power supply design preferred.
  • Knowledge of audio/amplifier design preferred.
  • Ability to learn and create schematic diagrams for electrical systems for new products and modifications for existing electrical systems.
  • Flexibility to perform other duties and assignments as required.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited University.
  • 0-3 years of engineering experience.
  • Basic troubleshooting skills.
  • Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of C and Python programming languages.
