Position Summary
Penn State Campus Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Lead Tennis Instructor to oversee our junior tennis programs, including camps and clinics. This part‑time position is ideal for a dynamic leader who is passionate about youth development, tennis instruction, and program management. The Lead Instructor will also serve as acting Program Director in the absence of the Director.
Responsibilities- Plan, organise, and help lead all junior tennis programs, including camps, clinics, and seasonal sessions.
- Serve as the primary contact for junior program participants, parents, and staff, handling inquiries and feedback professionally.
- Supervise, mentor, and train assistant instructors and camp counselors to ensure program quality and adherence to safety protocols.
- Develop and implement age‑appropriate lesson plans and progression pathways for junior players.
- Monitor and evaluate junior player development, maintain records, and provide individualized feedback.
- Coordinate and lead staff meetings and training sessions related to junior programming.
- Oversee daily camp operations, including participant check‑in/out, equipment set‑up, scheduling, and safety procedures.
- Act as Program Director when the Director is unavailable, making key decisions regarding program logistics, staffing, and emergency protocols.
- Manage administrative tasks such as attendance, program evaluations, and communication with the Tennis Director.
- Assist in promoting and recruiting junior programs and camps.
- Ensure compliance with university, departmental, and industry safety standards.
- Job performance may include all duties and responsibilities of positions in lower tier levels.
- Demonstrated experience in tennis instruction, particularly with junior players.
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a camp, clinic, or similar setting preferred.
- Strong communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- CPR/First Aid certification.
- Ideal candidates will play above a UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) level 4 and have varsity high‑school experience.
- Lead Instructors should have experience playing tennis at a competitive level with a USTA ranking or recognised rating (current or prior), strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with diverse age groups and skill levels.
